Palm Beach Cty Senior Am: Mackintosh's 138 bests Westwood by a shot
PALM CITY, Fla. - Gary Mackintosh birdied his first three holes Sunday and went on to win the 27th annual Palm Beach County Senior Amateur Championship at his home club, Martin Downs Country Club.
Mackintosh equaled his own competitive scoring record with a six under par 66 for 138, edging playing partner Rick Westwood of Wellington by one shot. Westwood closed with 67-139, low in the 50-59 age group. "We fed off each other," McIntosh said.
Jim Bounds, a six handicapper from Boynton Beach, shot his best score ever, also a 66, and earned overall low net honors among 95 Palm Beach County Golf Association members 50 years and older with 70-60-130 on the Osprey Creek course.
Beginning at the par-4 second hole, Mackintosh birdied the second, third and fourth holes, had more chances with birdie putts inside 10 feet on the next three holes, then added birdies at Nos. 8, 10, 15 and 17.
"I used my length off the tee to play the par-5s well, reaching five of them in two and being pin high off the green in two others," Mackintosh said. His only bogey Sunday was at the par-5 13th hole. It was his first senior golf win. He turned 50 in November.
Next on the PBCGA tournament schedule: Oct. 7-8, Dodge Four-Ball, Fox Club, Palm City, and Oct. 14-15, Junior-Senior, Abacoa GC, Jupiter. For information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
