What do you do to make putter designs that have won countless majors even better?

For Scotty Cameron, the answer lies in blending these classic designs with new shapes and configurations (counter-balanced for example) and adding multi-material technology. On the club side, Titleist is famous for using the PGA Tour as a proving ground, for irons, woods, and wedges. The Tour is particularly important with putters, where all the technology in the world may perform well in the lab, but won't wind up in a player's bag if it doesn't have that ever-important feel.

"When I show them something they can almost instantly tell me what they do or don’t like about it," Cameron recently told GolfDigestix. "Their input is invaluable as it allows us to get all the bugs worked out in the prototype stage before we go to production. We don’t start heading to production until we get all A’s on the report card from the tour."

Pick up any of the new Cameron Select models and it's clear why they passed the test. There's not a hint of clunkiness in any of the models. Just the opposite. The classic models like the Newport 2 have been dialed up to another level altogether with sole- to-topline inlays or face-sole pop-through technology, misted finishes, and refined colors and graphics.

The all important "soft but solid feel" comes from a combination of the new multi-material designs and an integrated vibration dampening system that connects the inlays to the putter heads. On top of that, the new models have enhanced alignment markings on the top, which are matched in size and design to each of the models. For example, the Newport 2 has a subtle flange sight line that runs parallel to the face to help you square up, while still emphasizing the notched black target line -- which players that draw a line on their ball love. But the Newport M1 Mallet adds something entirely new and different to the flange, which Scotty Cameron refers to as "pop-out." Check it out in the accompanying photo.

All of the putters in the Scotty Cameron Select putter line are tuned with heal and toe weighting that's matched to the putter's head shape and length.

While most of the Cameron Select models are for traditional styles, Cameron does have a number of other putters like the mallet-style GOLO and High MOI Futura X that may be of interest to players looking for help smoothing out their stroke.

The Scotty Cameron Selects Newport 2 Notchback DB is the exception, and it's a beauty. The counter-balanced model comes in 38” standard length, with a 15” Dual Balance grip, and 50g heavier putter head counter-balanced with a 50g weight in the shaft butt to slow down and stabilize the putting stroke.

As Cameron explained to GolfDigestix, there is a difference between "true counter balancing" and they way some people try to achieve it, which is especially true of those that take their existing models into the shop to have weight added to the grip.

"I’m a firm believer in true counterbalancing. I see so many people just adding weight in the grip end, and I don’t feel that is correct. You need that heft in the head, where I add 50 grams, and 50 grams to the grip. It’s also actually easier than anchoring. It’s the way to go. In many ways, this ban on anchoring has been a blessing for those golfers. I believe a counterbalanced putter produces a more repetitive stroke."

Rounding out the Scotty Cameron Select putters is a Matador Mid red grip, a beautiful mid-sized model that has a soft feel preferred by better players. That grip comes standard on all models except the Newport 2 Notchback DB, which comes with a Dual Balance grip.
