Xavier Holds Comfortable lead at Pinehurst Intercollegiate

Xavier extends lead to 10 after another strong showing on day two of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate

PINEHURST, NC (March 12, 2016)--The Xavier Musketeers turned a four-stroke lead after the first round into a ten-stroke advantage at the end of the second round. On a tough Pinehurst No. 8, Xavier (576) once more placed three players in the top-10, including the top-two finishers. Sophomore Jose Montano has paced the Musketeers and the field with a two day total of 1-under par. Montano, the Big East freshman of the Year last season, followed up an even-par 71 yesterday with a 1-under 70. The sophomore collected three birdies and two bogey's on the day. Xavier freshman Daniel Wetterich (even-par) finished in second place for the second consecutive day. Graduate student John Burger (3-over) sits in ninth place to round out the Xavier group in the top-10. Burger followed an opening round even-par round up with a second round, 3-over 74. Austin Peay State (586) jumps up a spot and now holds second place in the standings. Elon (587) drops from second to third. First round leader, Ball State sophomore, Johnny Watts is still very much in the mix sitting just two off the pace at 1-over. Five other players will enter the final day within five-shots of the lead. Round One The Xavier Musketeers lead the Pinehurst Intercollegiate following first round action. Xavier (288) has a four stroke lead over second-place Elon (292). Austin Peay State (292), Marshall (297) and Belmont (297) round out the top-5. The Musketeers were led by three players in the top-10 on day one. They were paced by second-place finisher Daniel Wetterich (1-under 70), Jose Montano (even-par 71) who finished in a third place tie and Matt Wetterich (2-over 73) currently tied for ninth. Ball State's Johnny Watts (2-under 69) was one of just two players to finish under-par on day one. Watts will carry a one-stoke lead over Wetterich into tomorrow's action.
