Dataw Island hosts the eighth annual Veterans Purple Heart Golf Classic
Dataw Island, SC – The Veteran’s Purple Heart Golf
Classic began at Dataw Island this morning with a field
of 200 supporters and 30 wounded veterans from all
across the U.S.
In the past, this Dataw Island tournament raised over $130,000 for veteran charity organizations, which include the OnCourse Foundation, the Folds of Honor Foundation, the National Military Order of the Purple Heart, and the Wounded Warrior Project. The tournament was started with the help of Dataw Island resident and retired U.S. Army COL. Glenn Blackburn, a Vietnam veteran and Purple Heart recipient.
“I am blown away by all the support given by this community (Dataw Island).” Blackburn said. “It is wonderful to see people embrace this event and this wonderful charity. I feel humbled to be a part of it and to have been able to watch it grow.”
Members of the U.S. Simpson Cup team and the OnCourse Foundation came to show their support today and play a round of golf while raising money for the Folds of Honor Foundation, which provides educational scholarships for dependents of those killed or injured in the service.
Michael Lacy, representing the OnCourse Foundation said, “Dataw Island is our home away from home. Thank you for allowing us to come out and for welcoming us so completely. You are helping people to become whole again.”
As part of Dataw’s Veteran’s week celebrations, Dataw’s Assistant Golf Professional and USA Simpson Cup Team coach, Chris Fearn hosted a golf marathon yesterday to raise funds for the Green Beret Foundation. This foundation works to provide direct and continuous support to the Green Beret Community and its families. After a long rainy day, Fearn played 156 holes of golf and raised over $16,000 for the charity.
