TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (Oct.5, 2015) – The No. 16 Alabama men's golf team carded a second-round score of 268 on Monday afternoon, which tied for the second-lowest team score in program history, and holds the lead after 36 holes at the 2015 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate. The Crimson Tide will enter Tuesday's final round with a team total of 14-under par 546 (278-268).

The Tide will carry an eight-stroke lead over No. 3 Auburn (554) into the event's final day. Florida State (555), the top-ranked team in the nation, is in third, while No. 23 Florida (558) and UNLV (566) round out the top five.

Alabama, which played its best golf of the 2015 fall season on Monday, was paced by its veteran leaders in junior Robby Shelton and senior Tom Lovelady, as the duo currently rank first and second in the individual standings, respectively.

Shelton scorched the par 70, 7,209-yard Old Overton course with a 36-hole total of 10-under par 130 (66-64). Shelton carded a 29 on his first nine holes of the second round on his way to a 6-under par 64. Both his second round score and 36-hole total matched his career-low marks and tied for the second-lowest scores in program lore.

Lovelady was nearly as impressive, finishing the day in second overall with a 5-under par 135 (70-65). After opening his day with an even par 70, Lovelady shot his low 18-hole score of the season and second-lowest round of his career with a 65 in the afternoon. The Mountain Brook, Ala., native caught fire with a stretch of six birdies in seven holes on his way to the ninth-lowest round in Alabama men’s golf history.

Freshman Davis Riley (73-69) and sophomores Steven Setterstrom (72-70) and Tyler Hitchner (72-70) are all in a tie for 18th position with a 2-over par 142, giving the Tide five golfers in the top 20.

The 2015 Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate marks the tournament’s 30th year of existence.

The Tide is looking to capture its fourth consecutive Jerry Pate Intercollegiate title in 2015. In all, Alabama has claimed the team title in seven of the last eight years heading into this year’s tournament (2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2012, 2013 and 2014).

The Jerry Pate Intercollegiate began back in 1986 and is named for the most successful professional golfer in Crimson Tide history. Pate currently plays on the Champions Tour and is active in the team selection for the tournament.

Shelton will be aiming for his second consecutive medalist honor after claiming the Dick’s Sporting Goods Collegiate Cup last weekend. If he achieves the feat, Shelton will join a list among some powerful names in the world of golf to win the JPNI individual title. Current PGA Tour golfers, Michael Thompson, Bud Cauley, Hunter Mahan, Jordan Spieth, Rory Sabbatini and D.J. Trahan have all won medalist honors at the Pate, and arguably the greatest golfer of all-time, Tiger Woods, won the JPNI in 1994 while competing for Stanford. David Kirkpatrick (1991), Joseph Sykora (2006), Mark Harrell (2007), Hunter Hamrick (2009) and Justin Thomas (2012) all took medalist honors for Alabama.

The third and final round begins at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday, with the Crimson Tide teeing off Hole No. 1 at 8:50 a.m. Live stats can be found on Golfstat.com. Admission to the event is free for the general public.
