2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur Qualifying

Qualifying has wrapped up for the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur, scheduled for October 3-8 at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla.

The best amateurs over the age of 25 have concluded 18-hole sectional qualifying for the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur, being held this year at John's Island Club in Vero Beach, Fla. October 3rd through the 8th.

Scott Harvey of Greensboro, N.C. will be back looking to defend his title captured last year at Saucon Valley over Missouri native Brad Nurski, and will have some more momentum to build off. Harvey captured the 2015 South American Amateur and the Gasparilla Invitational, along with other impressive finishes like tying for sixth at the Porter Cup and reaching the quarterfinals at the Japan Amateur.

Who will join Harvey in South Florida in early October? See accumulating qualifying results below until September 15 when it all wraps up at Hurstbourne Country Club in Kentucky.

September 10, 2015 | Pleasant Valley Country Club | Little Rock, Ark.
Reigning Arkansas Match Play champion Wes McNulty is headed to the 2015 U.S. Mid-Amateur after firing 69, highlighted by a bogey-free, 3-under back nine at Pleasant Valley Country Club. The small field allowed just one player to advance to the championship proper, with Packard Dewitt finishing four shots back of McNulty to grab the first alternate spot. Along with the recent ASGA victory, in which McNulty defeated Purdue University golfer Austin Eoff in the championship match, he also captured the 2013 Arkansas Stroke Play Championship. September 10, 2015 | Edinburgh USA | Brooklyn Park, Minn.
Making three birdies in his last five holes was Grand Rapids, Minn. native Michael Christensen. Posting 3-under 69, Christensen will be one of four qualifiers to advance out of the Brooklyn Park site, which also includes Joel Johnson, Sammy Schmitz, and Joe McCormick. Four players tied for fourth place at 1-over 73, with McCormick surviving the playoff to grab the final spot. Full results can be found here.

September 10, 2015 | Sawgrass Country Club | Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.
Jacksonville, Fla. resident Matthew Salane was medalist by a stroke over Jeff Golden. The East/West Course at Sawgrass C.C. was playing tough on Thursday as scores of 74 made it through to the championship proper, which will be head next month just down Interstate 95 in Vero Beach. Four players shot 74, with only three squeaking through, including Chip Brooke, Mike Smith, and Reb Benton. Full results can be found here.

September 10, 2015 | The Keswick Club | Keswick, Va.
Firing one of the lowest rounds of qualifying thus far was Justin Young of Roanoke. A 6-under 66, which included six birdies in his last seven holes, Young medalled by three shots at The Keswick Club. Scott Lamond, Jonathan Coats, and notable senior amateur player Paul Simson also advanced. Simson, of Raleigh, N.C., was this year's North & South Senior winner, and is a three-time British Senior Amateur winner and two-time U.S. Senior Amateur winner. Full results can be found here.

September 10, 2015 | Glen View Club | Golf, Ind.
A 3-under par back nine, including a timely eagle hole-out at the par-4 12th hole, gave Michael Natale of Indian Head Park medalist honors and a spot in next month's U.S. Mid-Amateur. He will be joined by other notable Chicago-area players, including 2014 Illinois Mid-Amateur winner Andrew Price and 2015 Lupton Memorial Invitational champion Charles Waddell. September 9, 2015 | Cobblestone Golf Course | Acworth, Ga.
Michael Standard finished with a fury on Wednesday, shooting 28 on the back nine at Cobblestone to fire 65 and medal at the crowded qualifying site by four shots. 126 players arrived at the course hoping to fill one of eight available qualifying spots. Along with Standard's winning round, players such as Matt Swan, Bob Royak, and Jack Larkin were among the remaining seven advancing golfers. Full results can be found here.

September 8, 2015 | Huntington Country Club | Huntington, N.Y.
A bogey-free 67 from Jeronimo Esteve allowed the Puerto Rico native to punch his ticket to the U.S. Mid-Amateur. His 3-under round of 67 was one of four under-par rounds on Wednesday, and one of eight advancing players. Among the other seven moving on to John's Island Club were Joe Saladino, Rich Messina, and Brian Flanagan. Full results can be found here.

September 8, 2015 | Bayonet Blackhorse Golf Course | Seaside, Calif.
Three players, including 2015 Walter J. Travis Invitational winner John Sawin of San Francisco, carded 2-under 70 at Bayonet to advance to the U.S. Mid-Amateur next month. Also posting 70 to share medalist honors with Sawin were Nick Moore of Seaside and David Moore of Monterey. Tying for fourth place at 71 were three players, though only two would be able to move on from the site. Jordan Scott of Santa Barbara and former University of San Francisco golfer Domingo Jojola squeaked by in the playoff, leaving Jordan McRobie as the first alternate. Full results can be found here.

September 8, 2015 | Oakdale Country Club | Oakdale, Calif.
Granite Bay, Calif. native Jon Peterson had a wild qualifying round at Oakdale Country Club in the Northern California foothills, working around five bogeys with five birdies and an eagle to post 2-under 70 and medal to advance to John's Island Club. Brian Edick and Sal Felice II tied for second place at 71, with Edick prevailing in a sudden- death playoff to move on to the championship proper. Full results can be found here.

The 2014 New York State Mid-Amateur champion, Adam Condello of Pittsford, N.Y., is headed to John's Island Club next month after shooting 68 at Bellevue on Friday. He will be joined by David May of Auburn, N.Y. who defeated Tim Spitz, also of Pittsford, in a sudden-death playoff at 1-under 71. May advanced with a par on the first extra hole. September 3, 2015 | Oak Hills Country Club | San Antonio, Texas
Former University of Nebraska golfer Andrew Wyatt, who briefly turned professional after graduating, is headed to his second straight U.S. Mid-Amateur after medalling at Oak Hills in San Antonio. Wyatt advanced to the final 16 last year at Saucon Valley, and after firing 1-under 70 to finish as top qualifier, he'll look to build ground upon last year's performance. Ryan Villareal and Colby Harwell, both of San Antonio, as well as Brian Noonan of Austin, were the final three qualifiers. Full results can be found here.

September 3, 2015 | The Orchards Golf Club | South Hadley, Mass.
Two medalists were crowned at The Orchards as Benjamin Spitz and Charlie Blanchard fired 1-under 69. Blanchard, the head men's golf coach at Bryant University in Rhode Island, had a spot wrapped up after being 4-under on his round through 13 holes before bogeying three of his last five. Spitz, of Norwell, Mass., went 1-under his final five holes and stayed out of a playoff. A.J. Oleksak, John Kelly, and Doug Clapp were part of a three-for-two playoff at even-par, with Oleksak and Kelly moving on and Clapp grabbing the first alternate spot. Full results can be found here.

September 3, 2015 | Heritage Club | Mason, Ohio
Fort Wright, Ky. native Brad Wilder was the only player under par after 18 holes, and subsequently punched his ticket to John's Island Club next month. Wilder and 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur runner-up teamed up last month to attempt qualifying for the 2nd annual U.S. Amateur Four-Ball, but missed the number by two shots at Four Bridges Country Club. Chad Bolt, Zake Masterson, and Craig Smith came in at even-par 70 and secured the remaining three spots at Heritage Club. Full results can be found here.

September 3, 2015 | Applebrook Golf Club | Malvern, Pa.
Robert Bechtold, 44 of Avondale, Pa., and David Gies II, 26 of Charlotte, N.C., shared medalist honors at Applebrook Golf Club. Playing as a par 71 at 6,776 yards, Bechtold and Gies posted 3- under 68 to top a 130-man field and secure the top two of eight available qualifying spots. This will be Bechtold's third U.S. Mid-Amateur, having played in the 2003 and 2007 events. For Gies, it will be his first Mid-Amateur, but not his first USGA event, having played the 2006 U.S. Junior Amateur, and the 2012 and 2014 U.S. Amateurs. Full results can be found here.

September 3, 2015 | Village Links of Glen Ellyn | Glen Ellyn, Ill.
Medalling in Illinois on Thursday was Mike Cushing of Bloomington, Ill. at 1-under par 71. He narrowly escaped what turned out to be a five-for-four playoff at even- par, with Jonathan Koonin being the odd-man out after the extra holes came to an end. Advancing out of the playoff were Cory Henry, Davis Bull, Troy Logan, and Glenn Przybylski. Full results can be found here.

September 2, 2015 | Cypress Ridge Golf Club | Arroyo Grande, Calif.
It was a three-way tie atop the leaderboard at Cypress Ridge on Wednesday. Bowen Osborn of Los Angeles, Sean Daly of Visalia, and Dan Ragsdale of Oak Park posted 3-under par 69, but only two spots were available. Though Ragsdale made birdie on the last hole to get into the playoff, he was the man left out after extra holes settled. Daly made no bogeys during his round, while Osborn made one early bogey at the second. Meanwhile, Ragsdale will be thinking about his two double bogeys on the back nine. September 2, 2015 | Fairmount Country Club | Chatham, N.J.
Eight spots were up for grabs in New Jersey, and it was Michael Muehr and Darin Goldstein finishing the day with shared medalist honors. Muehr, the 2014 Crump Cup winner from Potomac Falls, Va., made three birdies and an eagle during his round while Goldstein, of New York, N.Y., overcame three front-nine bogeys to card 3-under. September 2, 2015 | Texas Star Golf Course | Euless, Texas
The winner of this year's Texas North Amateur, Joshua Irving of Fort Worth, medalled at 2-under par 68, while seven other qualifiers will join him in heading to John's Island Club in October. The list of players is a slew of top mid-amateur talent from the state of Texas, including Brad Gibson and Aaron Hickman. The final spots were awarded after a seven-for-four playoff, as the large group tied for fifth place at 3-over 73. September 1, 2015 | Wampanoag Country Club | West Hartford, Conn.
1998 University of Connecticut graduate Brian Ahern, of West Hartford, eagled the first hole of the day, then strung together five straight birdies from holes 9 to 13 en route to an 8-under par round of 64 at his home course. He medalled by a stroke over Bryan Smith of Vermont, while Dave Bunker of Canada and Rodean Minto secured the final two qualifying spots. Full results can be found here.

September 1, 2015 | Colonial Country Club | Thomasville, N.C.
Four players posted 69 and shared medalist honors, as well as secured all four available qualifying spots at Colonial Country Club in North Carolina. Michael Muscatell, Joe Kastelic, Chris Cassetta, and Justin Tereshko were the group of players atop the leaderboard at 2- under. Tim Driver and Chris Holland tied for first place at two-under 70, sharing medalist honors and claiming both qualifying spots at Keith Hills. Driver is a former James Madison golfer while Holland is a native of Fayetteville, N.C. Full results can be found here.

August 31, 2015 | Vista Valley Country Club | Vista, Calif.
Former Cal State Northridge golfer Erik Jarvey made five back- nine birdies, including the last three holes of the day, to fire 5-under 66 and medal by two shots at Vista Valley Country Club. Jarvey would have still been one of five advancing players had he not birdied the last three holes, but nonetheless, took home the top prize and advancing to John's Island Club. Also moving on were Pete Williams of San Diego, Dale Smith of San Marcos, and Craig Erickson and Ryan Bogan, who were part of a three-for- two playoff, which left out first alternate Tobin Scott. August 31, 2015 | South Hills Country Club | West Covina, Calif.
Much like the Vista Valley qualifier, it was another former Cal State Northridge golfer taking medalist honors at the end of 18-hole sectional qualifying. Satch Herrmann, who made headlines earlier this year with his stellar medal play during the California Amateur, earning him medalist prize, advanced to a USGA championship on Monday after firing 7-under par at South Hills Country Club. He finished as the top player by two, making birdie at 17 and 18, while also making four consecutive earlier in the round from holes 6 to 9. Other qualifying players from this site include Greg Pupa, Jim Cheng, Corby Segal, and Mark Harding, who survived a four-for-one playoff at 2-under 70 to secure the final spot. August 31, 2015 | Wakonda Club | Des Moines, Iowa
Things went as expected at Monday's Iowa qualifier for the U.S. Mid-Amateur as top in- state players Gene Elliott and Jon Olson secured the two available qualifying spots at Wakonda Club. Elliott, whose list of recent amateur accomplishments includes wins at the 2013 Crump Cup, 2014 Iowa Senior Amateur, and a runner-up finish at the 2015 Iowa Amateur, shot 4-under 68 to earn the top spot. Olson, who has won two consecutive Iowa Mid- Amateurs, had to go five extra holes to defeat Patrick Hall as both players tied for second at 69. Full results can be found here.

Thirty-four players met at a Trans-Mississippi Golf Association founding club and grinded for two qualifying spots to advance to John's Island Club. Michael Greene of Overland Park, Kan. posted 2-under 69 while carding three birdies and one eagle on the day to earn medalist honors. Charlie Stevens and David Rismiller played off for the second and final spot, with Stevens prevailing with an eagle at the first extra hole. Full results can be found here.

August 25, 2015 | Gamble Sands | Brewster, Wash.
A small group gathered in Washington at Gamble Sands and battled for one qualifying spot. Cameron MacKenzie, a 2005 graduate of Oregon State University from Vancouver, posted 2-under par 70 to medal by a stroke over Roger Eichhorn of Bend, Oregon. MacKenzie played on the Beavers men's golf team for four years and was runner-up at the 2004 Oregon Amateur. He is now an investment advisor in Vancouver, B.C. and has prior U.S. Mid-Amateur experience, reaching the round of 64 in 2009. Full results can be found here.

August 24, 2015 | Franklin Hills Country Club | Franklin, Mich.
Jimmy Chestnut and Brett Hudson shared medalist honors in Michigan, carding matching 72s to lead a pack of five advancing players. The last guy in, Stephen McKalko of Troy, Mich., survived a multi-player playoff at 74.

August 24, 2015 | Valley Country Club | Centennial, Colo.
Getting this year's qualifying tournaments started was Andrew Tapia of New Mexico, who travelled up to the Rocky Mountains of Colorado to post 68 at medal at Valley Country Club in Centennial. Tapia was one of five qualifiers, including David Delich and Keith Humerickhouse who came in just a stroke back at 69. Humerickhouse is known in Colorado for winning four straight Colorado Mid-Amateurs from 2010 to 2013. Alan Boyko and Barry Erwin won a three-for-two playoff at 2-under par 70 to secure the remaining two spots. Full results can be found here.
