A final-round 68 from the Italian teenager pushed him a stroke ahead of 54-hole leader Gary Hurley for a big win in Slovakia

SENICA, Slovakia — The 2015 European Amateur was in the hands of Irishman Gary Hurley through 54 holes. That is, until Italian teenager Stefano Mazzoli posted five-under 31 on Saturday morning's front nine. With Hurley making all pars on his outward nine, Mazzoli made an incredible run to make three birdies and an eagle to jump two ahead of Hurley. By the 13th hole, Mazzoli had made three bogeys to drop a shot behind Hurley, but the 19-year-old would birdie holes 15 and 16 on the way in to sneak ahead and claim victory. Hurley, who used back-to-back rounds of 65 in rounds two and three to grab the lead entering the final round, would have to settle for a runner-up finish — he second straight at the event. In 2014, Hurley tied for second place with Germany's Max Roehlig three shots behind Ashley Chesters of England. Chesters was looking to make it three European Amateur titles in a row, but the mid-amateur player was not able to conquer Penati Golf Resort in Slovakia. Still, Chesters tied for 23rd place just seven shots back of Mazzoli. Irishman and this year's Irish Open Amateur winner Gavin Moynihan grabbed third place with a final-round 69, while Englishmen Scott Gregory and Jonathan Thomson tied for fourth place at 16-under. Gregory held a four-way share of the opening-round lead after shooting eight-under 64 but fell back with consecutive rounds of 70 in the middle rounds.
