Charlie's Maine Open: Jones Grabs Title by 1
AUBURN, Maine (August 10, 2006) -- Ricky Jones of Thomaston has a slew of titles under his belt -- two time Maine
Amateur Champion, several time Maine Mid-Amateur champ, course record holder at Charles River that's also a low score for the USGA State Team Championship single round. And for the past two years, he's been the MSGA Player of the Year.
Now he adds the 2006 Charlie's Maine Open to his list of golfing accomplishments, becoming the first amateur to win a 54-hole championship since Steve Robbins won it in 1971. Shawn Warren, of course, won it in a rain-shortened playoff victory in 2004. It was only the fourth time in history that a player has won both the Maine Amateur Championship and the Maine Open Championship, and only the ninth time in the 88th year history of the event that an amateur has won.
Baker took home first place pro honors and a check for $6,500, while John Hickson won Low Maine Pro honors, Don Robertson of Irving, Texas, won the Senior Pro crystal and the venerable Mark Plummer took gthe first place amateur title.
Jones seesawed back and forth with Mike Baker all day long as the two players, along with Rich Parker, played out in the last group. Baker took the lead for awhile, but Jones came back to birdie 17 to take the outright lead for good and hold onto his one-shot lead after two rounds. He was the only player to shoot under par on the first two days, and his three-over 75 today was good enough for the win.
Congratulations to Ricky Jones. And thanks to all of our sponsors, volunteers and especially the wonderfully accommodating staff at beautiful Fox Ridge Golf Club for a fabulous Charlie's Maine Open Championship. We look forward to returning to the Fox again next year!
