Elaine Wood ahead by one at Alabama Women's Stroke Play

SHOAL CREEK, Ala. — Former Alabama Women's
State Amateur champion
Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort and the University
of Montevallo fired an opening
round 71 in the 25th Alabama Women's State
Stroke Play Championship at
Shoal Creek on Tuesday to lead defending
champion Alison Hovatter of
Meridianville and Ole Miss by one.
Micheala Williams of Athens is in third after a 73
and former two-time Girls
State Junior champion Gabi Oubre of Mobile and
Mississippi State is fourth on
74.
All players will play three rounds of stroke play,
with play concluding on
Thursday.
Wood had birdies on holes 2, 8, 9 and 11 over
the storied venue against
bogeys on Nos. 1, 4 and 15 to become the only
player to post an under par
round.
Hovatter came firing home on the back nine in
just 33, courtesy of birdies on
Nos. 11, 13 and 17. She had three bogeys on the
front nine.
Williams, 17, finished second in the Girls State
Junior last year and third in
2013, as well as tied second individually in the
2015 6A-7A State High School
Championship.
