SHOAL CREEK, Ala. — Former Alabama Women's State Amateur champion Elaine Wood of Spanish Fort and the University of Montevallo fired an opening round 71 in the 25th Alabama Women's State Stroke Play Championship at Shoal Creek on Tuesday to lead defending champion Alison Hovatter of Meridianville and Ole Miss by one.

Micheala Williams of Athens is in third after a 73 and former two-time Girls State Junior champion Gabi Oubre of Mobile and Mississippi State is fourth on 74.

All players will play three rounds of stroke play, with play concluding on Thursday.

Wood had birdies on holes 2, 8, 9 and 11 over the storied venue against bogeys on Nos. 1, 4 and 15 to become the only player to post an under par round.

Hovatter came firing home on the back nine in just 33, courtesy of birdies on Nos. 11, 13 and 17. She had three bogeys on the front nine.
