Jody Vasquez fired a three-under-par 69 in the second round of the Texas Super Senior Amateur to surpass John Grace
Vasquez managed a bogey-free round, accompanied by three birdies, to grab hold of the championship lead. First round co-leader Grace started the second round on the back nine and converted two birdies before adding three bogeys on the front nine.
While both Vasquez and Grace have their eyes set on a Super Senior Championship victory heading into tomorrow’s final round, neither is a stranger to the winner’s circle. Vasquez claimed the Super Senior division title at the 2014 Texas Senior Championship at Shady Oaks Country Club, while Grace, a Shady Oaks member, has claimed victory in the Texas Amateur (1994), Mid-Amateur (1991, 1992, 1993 and 1994) and Senior (2010) Championships in his career.
In the Legends Division, Bob Hullender of San Antonio and Dale Fell of Georgetown remain poised to take a run at the title for seniors aged 75 and older. On Wednesday, Hullender and Fell separated themselves from the field today. Hullender shot a 4-over 76; Fell posted 5-over 77.
Hullender’s 10-over 154 leads Fell by one shot in the Legends Division. The next closest competitor is Phil Lobstein from Fort Worth who is 10 shots out of second place at 21-over 165.
Cool weather continued into Tuesday’s second round as competitors took on a firmer Live Oak course, which proved to remain challenging. The par-4 ninth hole played as the most difficult hole on the golf course with a stroke average of 4.795. The par-5 eighth hole, meanwhile, played as the easiest at a stroke average of 5.128.
Final round play of the Texas Super Senior Amateur Championship begins Thursday at 8:30 a.m., with groups starting off both the first and 10th tees
