With back-to-back rounds of 64, Xander Schauffele led his Aztec team to a 12-shot win at their home tournament
LAKESIDE, Calif. — Xander Schauffele opened the Barona Collegiate Cup with 71, giving way to back-to-back 64s to close his team's host event to lead San Diego State to a 12-shot win.
Playing Barona Creek Golf Club, Schauffele went 17-under to win the individual title by three strokes over his teammate Nahum Mendoza III, who was playing this week as an individual and not part of the Aztec's five-man team.
But SDSU still finished off the 13-team field by double digits even without Mendoza, thanks to a top-10 performance from PJ Samiere, the freshman from Hawaii who shot 64 in the third round, as well.
The University of San Diego took second place with their top player Grant Forrest of Scotland taking solo third place with rounds of 68, 69, and 68. Sacramento State finished in third place, eight shots behind USD.
