Phoenix Country Club hosted the 54th playing of the Bob Goldwater Cup Matches on Jan 5-6 where the Seniors ended a losing streak
PHOENIX, Ariz. (Jan. 6, 2015) — Phoenix Country Club hosted the 54th playing of the Bob Goldwater Cup Matches on January 5-6, where 24 of Arizona's top amateur golfers competed against 24 Southwest Section PGA Professionals.
The Southwest Section professionals have been on a long winning streak, but that came to an end this year in the Senior Division.
The seniors consisted of Captain Pat Geare, Tom Sweigart, Tom Beach, Rusty Brown, Jeff New, Laurie Warder, Marc Apps, John DelBrocco, Frank Ellenburg, Lee Decof, David Rasley and Allen Webster.
The seniors held their own in the morning four-ball matches tying the professional 3-3. It was during the afternoon Foursome Matches that they stepped up their game winning 4-1/2 to 1-1/2 giving them a four-point lead going into the Tuesday’s singles matches. After a hard-fought day, they prevailed on seven of the 12 matches to win back the cup 14-1/2 to 9-1/2.
The Open Division consisted of Captain Bryon Hoops, Shankar Natarajan, Greg Cesarek, Mills Brown, Ken Tanigawa, Grant Cesarek, Kris Marshall, Sean O’Donnell, Trey Martin, Adam Walicki, Warren Vickers and Scott Beren.
They had a promising start only being down two after the morning Four-ball matches but the afternoon Foursomes had the same result so at the end of the day, they were down a hefty 8-4. The Tuesday singles matches were halved six to six. Final results – SWSPGA wins 14-10.
