Jared Meyers of North Palm Beach was victorious while equaling the longest playoff in the 38-year history of the PBCGA
Meyers, 35, a financial planner, outlasted teenager Anthony Gabriele of West Palm Beach after they tied at 142, even par for 36 holes. They halved the first seven holes on six pars and birdies at the par-5 fifth. Then Meyers sank a four footer to save his par-4 from a greenside bunker at the eighth. Moments earlier, Gabriele made a 20-foot putt for bogey.
“It was crazy, I’ve never seen anything like it,” said Myers. It was his fifth PBCGA title since 2008, his first this year. “I drove the ball great both days and I’ll bet I made more putts in the 10-20 foot range than I did on 5-10 footers.” He had rounds of 72-70 with three birdies Saturday in matching the low round of the day.
Gabriele, a home-schooled high school graduate, is headed for the College of Charleston, S.C., in January. He had consecutive par-71s here. Gabriele and Jackson Shoenfelt won the Arrigo Fiat Classic on Oct. 5 at Palm Beach Polo.
Heretofore the only PBCGA event to go eight extra holes was the 1998 Dodge Four-Ball at Bear Lakes CC won by Vince Cherrix and Jim Patrone.
The Tour Championship’s two older age groups were won by Darryl Osler of West Palm Beach, 50-59, and Steve Sim, Fort Lauderdale, 60-older.
Osler shot 69-73—142 to win his sixth PBCGA event since 2005, his third this year. In 36 holes, he had five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey.
Sim had 74-78—152 on four birdies, two bogeys, none Saturday, and four doubles. His only other PBCGA victory came in 2004.
Season-long points winners were cited after the final event of the season. The winners were Meyers, Open division, Bankrate Cup; Peter Wegmann, Fort Lauderdale, Braman Cup, seniors, and Dann Merrell, West Palm Beach, Braman Cup, super seniors.
