The Ping Sensor Sport golf glove combines the feel of cabretta leather with some really well thought-out moisture wicking and ventilation features
The Sensor Sport glove (one of three models in the Sensor line) is exactly what I would expect from Ping. Lots of thought has obviously gone into the design -- my favorite features are the feel, the resistance to twisting, and the durability.
This particular model is made of "Solite" Cabretta leather with Lycra spandex in the knuckle area, finger vents, and moisture wicking in the wrist area. I would say it's the Ping Sensor glove model you should try first.
[The other two gloves in the Sensor line, not featured in this review, are the traditional cabretta leather "Tour" and the synthetic leather "Tech," an all-weather design.]
Venting and moisture wicking are really useful for a number of reasons. Anyone that plays in the heat knows that. And if the resulting resistance to dampness is responsible for the Sensor glove lasting longer, I’m all for it – gloves are expensive when you play 100 plus rounds per year, yanking them on and off after every shot.
Here are the results of my personal use study of the Sensor Sport glove.
PRIMARY PLAYING CONDITIONS
I used it in California primarily, but I also played while traveling in some really humid weather. Florida for example.
FEEL AND MOISTURE WICKING
I love the fit and feel, two really important things I look for in a glove. (The third is durability.) The vents and elastic are in the perfect places.
COMPARABLE PRODUCTS
The leather is a similar thickness to most of the high end gloves.
DURABILITY
The durability and resistance to twisting are two really strong features of the Ping Sensor glove. I played literally 3 times a week plus practiced a couple of more times for two months with the same glove. I experienced very little twisting in the thumb and forefinger which tends to be a problem for me with other gloves.
FIT
Right out of the box I knew a medium was right on size. I wear a medium and the Ping Sensor fit -- excuse the pun -- like a glove.
MY EXPERIENCE WITH GLOVES IN GENERAL
I always wear a glove when I play, practice, and even when I putt (like the great Jack Nicklaus) Prior to this I didn’t have a favorite brand of glove. I would just grab whatever the pro shop has that fits.
DESIGN THOUGHTS
When I was a kid, I used to love to play a black or maroon glove. I swear I could feel the difference in the leather. Maybe it was the way it was treated to get that color. I’ve played white gloves for years and like the simplicity, but I wouldn’t mind seeing some additional color accents added to the Ping Sensor, if just in the closure area or logo.
