Canadian Club Champions: Wild Finish in Nova Scotia

Geoff McMillan of Glencoe Golf & Country Club in Calgary climbed to the top of the pack and earned the Canadian Club Champion Championship

Baddeck, N.S. (RCGA) (July 1, 2006) – After numerous lead changes throughout the final day Geoff McMillan of Glencoe Golf & Country Club in Calgary climbed to the top of the pack and earned the Canadian Club Champion Championship at Bell Bay Golf Club in Baddeck, N.S.

McMillan, who started the day tied for seventh, made an early move and held on as yesterday’s leader Rob Cowan of Kitchener, Ont. failed to defend his third-round lead. McMillan fired a final round 71 to finish with a total of 76-75-72-71—294 at six-over par for the week.

Cowan, Peter Campbell of host Bell Bay Golf Club, Andrew Ross of Dundas, Ont., representing Hamilton Golf & Country Club and Terry O’Brien of Tangle Creek Golf Club in Barrie, Ont., all finished tied for second place two-strokes behind at 296 in the wild finish.

The title was up for the taking as McMillan, O’Brien and Cowan all occupied the top position at various points on Friday. The entire championship was a shoot-out from start to finish with a new clubhouse leader each round. Michel Landry of Tracadie, N.B. representing Club de Golf Pokemouche in Caraquet, N.B. opened the tournament with a 70 while Phil Patterson of Prescott Golf Club in Prescott, Ont. took the lead during the second-day and Cowan held the lead after the third round.

The 27 year-old McMillan was able to birdie holes 1, 3 and 4 to move into position early and hold on as the field faltered due to on again, off again rain showers.

“I knew on the 18th tee that something was going on with the lead,” said McMillan, who started in the third-last group. “I figured if I could just par the final hole that it’d be good enough for a playoff. I missed a 20-foot birdie putt and tapped in a par. It was all I needed.”

McMillan, a two-time club champion who competed at the Canadian Club Champions Championship in 2003, was overwhelmed by his first national championship title.

“This is the biggest thing I’ve ever won. The guys back home are going to be pretty impressed by this and think it’s special. I’ve never really won anything outside my home club before so I’m ecstatic to be considered a national champion.”

Cowan is now the only person to be a three-time runner up without capturing the Canadian Club Champions Championship. He was a runner up in 2000, 2002 and now 2006. O’Brien is now a two-time runner up finishing second at last year.

With the win, McMillan earns an exemption to compete at the Canadian Men’s Amateur Championship at Mississaugua Golf & Country Club from August 11-18. Additionally, following the RCGA’s Pathway to Champions, if McMillan becomes a finalist in match-play at the Canadian Men’s Amateur he will earn an exemption into the Canadian Open played September 4-10 at Hamilton Golf & Country Club in Hamilton, Ont.

To qualify for entry into the Canadian Club Champions Championship, a player must have won either his club’s stroke or match play championship. The championship was conducted at stroke play over 72 holes and after 54 holes the field was cut to the low 70 scores and ties.
