Stacy Lewis of The Woodlands, TX defeats defending-champion Jennifer Hong of Evanston, IL 9&7 to win the 106th Women's Western Amateur at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, Virginia
BLUEFIELD, VA (June 24, 2006)--Stacy Lewis of The Woodlands, TX defeated defending-champion Jennifer Hong of Evanston, IL 9&7 to win the 106th Women's Western Amateur at Fincastle Country Club in Bluefield, Virginia. For Lewis, it was the continuation of a memorable year of amateur golf, having started the year with a win at the Harder Hall Womens Invitational in Sebring, Florida, and recently finishing runner-up in the Southern Women’s Amateur Championship in Pinehurst, North Carolina.
Lewis, a two-time all-Southeastern Conference and National Golf Coaches Association All-American at the University of Arkansas, carded 10 birdies in 29 holes for the 9&7 win over Hong.
Lewis opened play capturing medalist honors in the two-day stroke play portion of the tournament with a 68-72 for 140. She won her next three matches 4&3 before a 3&2 win over Central Florida graduate Ashley Grier in the morning round on Friday. In the afternoon round, Lewis defeated Emily Hoeper, a senior at Denver University, three-and-one, moving into Saturday’s final.
