Steve Hudson and Robert Nelson combined for rounds of 64-65–129 to lead the way

LOXLEY, Ala. (May 3, 2014) -- Stroke play qualifying is in the books in the 32nd State Four Ball Championship at Steelwood in Loxley. And two vastly experienced players headline the leading team as Birmingham’s Steve Hudson and Fairhope’s Robert Nelson combined for rounds of 64-65–129 to lead the way. UAB golfer and Mobile resident Wilson McDonald and Fairhope’s Ty Thompson placed second with rounds of 66-65–131, followed by last year’s champions, Hunter Bronson of Montgomery and Brinson Holder of Point Clear, both former students at the University of Alabama, who shot 66-66–132 and Scottsboro’s Robson Copenhaver and former UAB golfer and Albertville native Blake Mozley, 65-67–132. The low 16 teams after Friday’s 36 holes of stroke play advanced to match play in this Alabama Golf Association state championship. Those teams will play matches Saturday morning and the eight advancing teams will play that afternoon, with four teams left Sunday morning and the final two teams playing each other Sunday afternoon to determine the champion. “These rounds give us a lot of confidence heading into match play, but we accept it for what it is…we got one of the 16 (qualifying) spots,” former Alabama golfer and three-time AGA champion Hudson said. “Robert is swinging the club well and I made a lot of putts. It was a team effort and we are both encouraged.” A playoff was needed to determine the final qualifiers, with three teams playing extra golf for the final two spots, which were claimed by David Barnett and Thomas Druhan and Richard Douglas and John Miller, with Robbie Cotten and McGowin Miller missing out.
