Concession Cup: All-square after Day 1

BRADENTON, Fla. (May 1, 2014) -- Perhaps fittingly, the first round of the inaugural competition pitting the best mid-amateur and senior golfers from the U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland finished in a tie.

As the inaugural Concession Cup teed off from The Concession Golf Club, the teams from U.S. and Great Britain & Ireland played to a 4 1/2-4 1/2 draw after Day 1 Foursomes matches.

Chip Lutz and reigning U.S. Mid-Amateur champion Mike McCoy earned the first U.S. points, knocking off Richard Partridge and Martin Young. The Americans won five straight holes on the back nine to close out a 5-and-3 victory.

Patrick Christovich continued his hot play after his win at the Coleman Invitational last weekend by powering the U.S. to another win, 3-and-2 alongisde Martin West.

Paul Simson and Scott Harvey also won for the U.S. The duo beat Andrew Stracey and Edward Richardson.

George Zahringer and Nathan Smith picked up the other full U.S. points.

Three teams from Great Britain & Ireland won handily with Robbie Cannon and Adrian Morrow beating Vinny Giles and Trip Kuehne, 5-and-3, Maurise Kelly and James Bunch beating Pat Tallent and Tim Jackson 5-and-3 and super seniors Peter Hedges and Ian Hutcheon knocking off Jim Holtgrieve and Randy Lewis, 4-and-3.

Indeed, the two teams at the inaugural Concession Cup are evenly matched.

Each team will hope to take a step ahead during Friday's Four-Ball matches.

The Concession Cup is a biennial amateur team match-play competition featuring Mid-Am, Senior and Super Senior competitors representing the United States and Great Britain/Ireland.

The contest is staged in the image and likeness of other amateur team match-play competitions with the focus directed toward celebrating amateur golf and the spirit of international competition. In honor of two of the greatest amateur competitors in the history of the game, a trophy has been commissioned in the names of United States amateur, Bill Campbell and British Amateur, Sir Michael Bonallack – the Campbell/Bonallack trophy will be presented to the winning team at the conclusion of the matches.

ABOUT THE Concession Cup

Created by supporters of amateur golf, The Concession Cup is an event designed to celebrate the game through international competition while giving back to worthy causes. The event is a biennial team competition played between teams comprised of leading male Mid-Amateurs, Senior Amateurs and Super Senior Amateurs from the United States and Europe.

The Concession Cup Committee will select the participating players through the following categories:
Six (6) Mid-Amateurs, age 25 to 54.
Six (6) Senior Amateurs, age 55 and older.
Two (2) Senior Amateurs, age 65 and older.

The competition is conducted over three days through the traditional team match-play formats of foursome, four-ball and singles. In honor of two of the greatest amateur competitors in the history of the game, a trophy has been commissioned in the names of United States amateur, Bill Campbell and British Amateur, Sir Michael Bonallack – the Campbell/Bonallack trophy will be presented to the winning team at the conclusion of the matches.
