Brandon Hagy (71-70-71 – 212, -4) won his team-high-tying third event of the season and for the fourth time in his career
BRYAN, Texas (April 6, 2014) – Brandon Hagy (71-70-71 – 212, -4) won his team-high-tying third event of the season and for the fourth time in his career at the Aggie Invitational hosted by Texas A&M that concluded Sunday under soggy conditions at the par-72, 7,146-yard Traditions Golf Club. Hagy was the only golfer in a field of 70 with three consecutive under-par rounds and won by three strokes over Texas A&M’s Greg Yates (74-72-69 – 215, -1), who was the only other player to finish under par.
“Brandon put on a show here,” head coach Steve Desimone said. “His performance included some of the best golf our program has ever seen. He’s a very worth champion and he just keeps getting better.”
Cal (302-302-302 – 906) had the second-best team score Sunday with a third consecutive round of 14-over par 302 to jump three spots into a tie for fourth. Cal’s top-five finish was its 39th in its last 40 events dating back to the beginning of the 2011-12 season.
Hagy was at the top of the leaderboard for nearly the entire tournament after three consecutive birdies on the third, fourth and fifth holes of his opening round Saturday.
“It felt great to play that solid with a lead,” Hagy said. “It gives me confidence for the next time I’m in that situation.”
Hagy began his final round Sunday with a bogey on his first hole of the day on the par-five 10th before playing his final 17 holes in two-under par. Hagy had birdies on the par-four 13th, first and third holes before one more bogey on the par-three seventh during a round that included a 30-minute rain delay.
“I played really solid today,” Hagy said. “I kept the ball in play off the tee for most of the round, which made it easier to hang in there with the tough conditions. I also made some good putts at important times during the round that you have to make to win.”
“This was a brutal day to play golf,” Desimone added. “It was one of the worst days I can remember that this team has ever had to endure. I know we’ve had worse, but it’s been a long time since we’ve seen anything like today. I’ve got to give the team a lot of credit for not giving an inch on the golf course. They fought all day today, but we made too many mistakes yesterday to win this thing and made a couple more today.”
Keelan Kilpatrick (76-76-75 – 227, +11) was the next Cal player on the leader board in a tie for 21st. Joël Stalter (77-78-79 – 234) tied for 37th, while James Yoon (78-78-79 – 234, +18) tied for 41st and Michael Weaver (79-81-77 – 237, +21) tied for 48th.
Two Cal players participating in the tournament as individuals – Shotaro Ban (71-75-77 – 223, +7) and Pace Johnson (79-71-80 – 230, +14) – tied for eighth and 28th, respectively. Neither player’s score counted towards Cal’s team total.
Cal returns to action April 12-13 when the Golden Bears travel to the Western Intercollegiate hosted by San Jose State at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz.
