Jeff Burda and John Richart tie Gary Hardin and Bob Kain to win the senior flight; Robert Funk and Dave Bartman storm to the top of the mid am division

INDIAN WELLS, Calif. (April 6, 2014) -- Defending champs Jeff Burda (Modesto, CA) and partner John Richart stormed into a tie for first at the 32nd Giddings Cup today at Indian Wells Golf Resort. The pair posted 68-66 (the first round having been played at Silver Rock in La Quinta) to pass Oklahomans Ken Kee and Mike Alsup (3rd at 66-69) and catch up to Gary Hardin and Bob Kain (67-67). A tie was declared and the Committee will present matching trophies to all four players. In the inaugural Mid-Am division called the Landmark Flight, the Southern California team of Robert Funk and David Bartman posted a fine Sunday round of 6-under 66 to overtake the three teams in front of them. Playing with desert "locals" Joe Sanders and Tyler Crawford in the group behind the leaders, a very close battle went on which saw Funk and Bartman make three putts of 10-25 feet on their last three holes to seal the deal. Funk and Bartman finished at 70-66=136 while Sanders and Crawford's rounds were 69-68=137. First round leaders Pete Wlodkowski and Kyle Rector tied for third place with former Palm Springs High School teammates O.D. Vincent and Brian Leitgeib. SUPER SENIORS The Virginia team of Walt Martin and Greg Mokler posted a pair of 70s to win by a single shot over David Goss and Skip Pierce while first round leaders Bob Fouke and Bob Howe fell back into third place at 142. ABOUT THE GIDDINGS CUP Named for 11-time USGA contestant and Northern California G.A. Champion Dick Giddings, the Giddings Cup originated in 1952 when Landmark Golf founder Ernie Vossler (dec. 2013) met Dick Giddings (dec. 2002) at a tournament in Arizona. The pair began a friendship that spanned four decades. In 1983, Vossler and 25-year Bob Hope Classic Director General Bill Yancey began the Giddings Cup -- the tournament is now in its 32nd year.
