California CIF High School Championship: Results/Story

Fowler blisters the front nine in 6-under, shoots 64 on the day to win the individual title, while De La Salle of Concord wins the team title by 1

SANTA MARIA, (June 6, 2006 ) -- Murrieta Valley High School junior Rickie Fowler birdied six of his first nine holes and shot an 8-under-par 64 to win his first CIF-CGA State High School Boys' Championship at Santa Maria Country Club.  Concord's De La Salle won the team championship, firing a 3-over-par 363 and edging Cathedral Catholic of San Diego by one shot.

The 17-year-old Fowler finished four shots in front of Junipero Serra senior Jordan Cox, Damien's Lawrence Hsu and Cathedral Canyon sophomore Daniel Miernicki, all of whom shot 4-under-par 68s, while 2006 Southern Regional champion Rory Hie, of Cerritos, secured fifth with a 69.  Tied for sixth were Stockdale senior Bryan Hogan and De La Salle's Gregory Main, each with 70.

In the team chase, Cathedral Catholic had two players shoot sub-par rounds, including Miernicki and Chris Cunningham, who scored a 1-under 71.  De La Salle's Main, Roberto Galletti (71) and Ryan Thomas (71) all fired sub-par rounds as well.

Junipero Sera collected a 374 to take third place, while Southern Regional third place team winner Damien came in at 382 for fourth. Torrey Pines, who lost in a card-off to Cathedral Canyon for the Southern Regional team title, tied for last place with Monte Vista, with both teams shooting 383.

However, all eyes were on the diminuitive Fowler, especially since his team failed to advance to the state championship. "I'm feeling relieved," Fowler said after his victory. "I wanted to play well, especially since my team didn't get to make it out here to the championship, so there was a little extra pressure."

Fowler, who tied for third at the CIF-SCGA Southern Regional Championship on June 1, is no stranger to victories.  As a freshman he secured the Southern Regional individual title, shooting a 10-under-par 62 at The SCGA Golf Course, and he won the California Junior Amateur and the Western Junior Championships in 2005. He is currently ranked sixth in the nation for junior golfers.

"The biggest difference between today and the Southern Regional was definitely putting," he said.. "I couldn't hit the hole to save my life last week. I've been hitting the ball well and playing well.  I just hadn't been putting well."

Fowler began playing golf at age three, and his 6-under through nine is his lowest nine-hole score to date. His 64 was two strokes off of the 6,505-yard course's tournament record of 62.
