Bob Neal of Arlington wins in sudden-death over Marc Campbell of Southlake after both players finish at 7-under; Doug Baker of Austin wins the Senior Division by 1 over Peter Dahlberg of Ft Worth; Blane Freytag of Peoria, AZ wins the Net Division by 7
LEWISVILLE, TX (June 4, 2006)--Bob Neal of Arlington defeated Marc Campbell of Southlake on the second hole of a sudden-death playoff to win the inaugural amateurgolf.com North Texas Amateur at The Golf Club at Castle Hills in Lewisville. Both players had identical 68-69--137 totals to finish at 7-under for the tournament.
In the playoff, both Neal, 49, and Campbell, 22, parred the 479-yard 1st hole, before Campbell's three-putt at the 2nd allowed Neal to two-putt for the win.
After round one, 11 players were under par, with four--Josh Irving of Mansfield, Stephen Paterson of Austin, Campbell and Neal--sharing the lead at 4-under 68. Todd McGrew of Coppell was two shots back at 70, with an additional six players at 71.
Irving started fast with birdies at #2 and #3 to get to 6-under, where Paterson joined him with birdies at #6 and #9. With nine holes to go, Irving and Paterson led by one over Neal and two over Campbell and McGrew.
But things turned quickly on the back nine, as Campbell birdied three holes in a row starting at #10, while Irving and Paterson fell out of contention, both coming home in 40. When Neal bogeyed the par-3 12th, he fell three shots behind, but birdies at #13, #14 and #16 gave him the lead after Campbell bogeyed the long par-4 15th. Campbell's birdie at the par-5 17th pulled him even with Neal, and when both players parred the 18th the playoff was set.
McGrew had the low final round with a 68 to finish at 138, one shot out of the playoff. Todd Parker of Dallas birdied the last two holes to shoot 69 for a 140 total and 4th place, while Irving and Paterson closed with 74's to finish tied for 5th at 142. In all, eight players finshed under par for the tournament.
In the Senior Division, Doug Baker of Austin entered the final round with a one-shot lead over Jim Butcher of The Colony, with Peter Dahlberg of Fort Worth an additional two shots back. Dahlberg closed with a 73 to pull within one shot, but in the end Baker's 75 was good enough for a 147 total and a one-shot win.
In the Net Division, Blane Freytag of Peoria, AZ followed his opening 10-under 62 with a 68 for a 130 total and a seven-shot win over Cesar Hernandez of Carrollton, with Jin Han of Allen, TX in third with a 139 total.
The Golf Club at Castle Hills proved to be a great host course, with excellent playing conditions and practice facilities, and a good pace of play.
