VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - The top-ranked Alabama men's golf team looked the part on Monday during the first two rounds of the Jerry Pate National Intercollegiate at the par-70, 7,204-yard Old Overton Country Club, shooting an 8-under-par total of 552.The Crimson Tide has a 10-shot lead over second-place Texas A&M (+2, 562) with Texas in third at 4-over 564. UAB is fourth at 565 with Arkansas (+14, 574) fifth and Auburn (+16, 576) sixth. The Tide opened with a 6-under-par round of 274 in the morning 18 and followed that up with a 2-under 278 in the afternoon round.

"This is a great golf course - a tough test," Alabama head coach Jay Seawell said. "I think we won it last year at 17-over. I understand we have had some rain and it is a little softer, but there are some holes out here that can get you, and they get everyone.

"We kept our head above water today during the tough stretch and that is why we had a decent day."

Seniors Bobby Wyatt and Trey Mullinax paced Alabama at 3-under 137 and are tied for fourth. UAB's Wilson McDonald leads all players at 8-under 132 after rounds of 65 and 67.

Mullinax, from Birmingham, opened with a 4-under 66 in the morning and then shot 1-over 71 in the afternoon. Wyatt, a native of Mobile, carded a 70 in the first round and closed with a 67 in round two that included a birdie on his final hole of the day.

Another Birmingham native Tom Lovelady turned in a solid first day at 2-under 138 and enters Tuesday's final round alone in sixth place. He shot 68 on the morning 18 and followed with even-par 70 in the afternoon.

Freshman Robby Shelton opened with an even-par 70 and followed that up with a 2-over 72 in the second round. He is tied for 13th at 2-over 142 with teammate Cory Whistsett one shot back at 143 in a tie for 17th.
