Phil Tripoli now holds the lead at 2-over par 142 heading into Thursday’s final round

DELMAR, NY (Sept. 18, 2013) -- Scott Dean (Attica GC), first round leader of the 2013 N.Y.S. Senior Amateur Championship, lost ground on Wednesday at Normanside Country Club. Phil Tripoli (Oswego CC) now holds the lead at 2-over par 142 heading into Thursday’s final round. Dean, not able to maintain the same consistency he held in the first round, made eight bogeys and one lone birdie; he finished Wednesday with a six-over par 76.With a 36-hole total of 146, Dean now sits tied for fourth with Steve Nosonowitz (McCann GC), 2012 N.Y.S. Men’s Senior Amateur Champion. Meanwhile, Tripoli played a steady round of golf to secure his spot atop the leader board. “I hit the ball well off of the tee”, Tripoli commented after posting an even-par 70 in the second round. “I kept the ball in play and managed to hit a lot of greens”. For much of the round on Wednesday, Tripoli relied on two-putt pars but managed to sneak in two birdies on the par-3 3rd and the par-5 14th. With a 36-hole total of 142, Tripoli leads the tournament by two strokes. Although, Tripoli dealt with a wrist injury in the first two months of the season, he is back to playing with confidence which bodes well not only for his game and but also his appearance in Thursday’s final round. “If my swing feels the same and I keep the same tempo, tomorrow should be good outcome”, Tripoli said. Earl Winchester (Shaker Ridge CC) finished the day tied for second with a 36-hole total of 144. Winchester shot a 1-under 69 in the second round on Wednesday, his lowest round of the season thus far. Winchester, a long-time member of Normanside CC and a regular participant in N.Y.S. tournaments played in the marquee group in the final round of the 2003 N.Y.S. Men’s Senior Amateur (the first year he was age eligible to participate). Although Winchester was unable to claim the title in 2003, ten years later, he’s looking forward to making a run at it tomorrow. When asked about Thursday’s final round, Winchester said, “I’m nervous but excited”. NYSGA Committee Member, Douglas Vergith (St. George’s G&CC) is third overall with a 36-hole total of 145. In the Super-Senior Amateur Championship, Winchester holds the lead while Vergith sits second overall. Dale Dirk (Blue Heron Hills GC) and Charles Connolly (Kingswood GC), 2012 Super-Senior Amateur Champion, are tied for fourth with a 36-hole total of 148. There was a cut after round two of the Championships; low 50% and ties in each age division (55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70+) made the cut. The cut fell at 166. Thursday’s final round will begin at 8:00AM off of tees #1 & #10. The marquee group will tee-off at 9:39AM off of tee #1.
