Randy Cumming, Ray Natividad, Ankur Patel, and Marianus von Korff win their respective divisions
Cummings wins President Flight
Once upon a time, Randy Cummings sported a 2 handicap, but that was a decade ago when he had time to play lots of golf. Today, the 42-year-old Mission Viejo resident played to a 6 handicap at Steele Canyon GC's Ranch/Meadow course, but it was enough to carry him to a six-shot victory over Kirk Dancses of Huntington Beach. Cummings shot net 70-66 - 136 and rallied past Dancses, the first-round leader, who finished at 67-75 - 142.
Natividad takes Vice President Flight
Ray Natividad didn't have to travel too far to get to Steele Canyon, but the 32-year-old Mira Mesa resident made the trip worthwhile with a two-shot margin in the Vice-President flight. Natividad, who didn't start playing golf until he immigrated to the U.S. at age 18, was a shot off the lead after the first round, but finished at 68-72 - 140, defeating John Janssons of Barstow and William Wheeler of San Juan Capistrano.
Patel holds on for Secretary Flight win
San Diego resident Anker Patel shot a net 64 in the first round at Cottonwood at Rancho San Diego GC, then held off Aliso Viejo's Michael Younger to win the Secretary Flight by two shots. Patel, 25, a marketing manager for a biotech company playing in the SCGA Amateur Net for the first time, rallied from two shots down with four holes to go by making two birdies and two pars on his last four holes.
von Korff rallies to win Treasurer Flight
Marianus von Korff, a 42-year-old Los Angeles police officer, rallied from off the pace with a net 65 in the second round to edge first-round leader Richard Kemnitzer of Mission Viejo by one shot. "I played lights out on the front nine today," said von Korff after his win. "Then the wheels came off. I just tried to relax and hit the ball."
