Adam Goins wins the South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship 2&1 over Austin Cody.

CLINTON, S.C. (June 16, 2013) — Final Match Play results of the 41st South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship of the Carolinas Golf Association hosted by Musgrove Mill Golf Club in Clinton, SC on Sunday, June 16, 2013 (6788 yards, par 36-36—72, 74.4/147). The second time’s a charm for Gaffney, SC native Adam Goins. The 2011 South Carolina Amateur Match Play runner-up was able to break through this time with a 2&1 victory over Austin Cody of Charleston, SC to claim the 2013 South Carolina Amateur Match Play Championship. Goins, who will be a USC-Upstate senior in the fall, won both par 5s and lost both par 3s on the front to make the turn all square with Cody. “The course fits my eye and my swing felt good early on,” Goins said. “I took an aggressive line on 2 (par 3) and it cost me, but I made a birdie on 3 (par 5), nice par on the difficult 4th, and had good looks on 5 and 6, they just didn’t fall.” Cody won number 7 to go 1-up, but Goins responded and reeled off three straight birdies on 8, 9 and 10 to take a 1 up lead after 10 holes. “The birdies on 8 & 9 really got me going.” After matching pars on 11, Goins won number 12 to take a 2-up lead with 6 holes to play. Austin Cody, a rising Duke University senior, answered with a birdie on 14 to get back to 1-down. The match seemed to swing back into Cody’s favor, but Goins again answered with a huge birdie on 15 to go back to 2-up with 3 to go. Goins, commenting on his last birdie, “The birdie on 15 got the momentum back and that was big going into 16, I could kind of feel it then.” Both players made par on the 16th hole and got to the difficult par 3 17th with Goins 2-up. Both players hit the green but missed their birdie putts. Cody made a difficult 6-footer for par to force Goins to make his 3-footer to win. Goins dropped the putt and fist pumped as his family cheered him on. This is Adam Goins first CGA title.
