Callaway has updated both balls in the never-ending quest to squeeze out more yards while retaining control and consistency
In recent years, Phil Mickelson, Xander Schauffele and Francesco Molinari are among the pros who have switched to either the Chrome Soft or the firmer-feeling Chrome Soft X. For 2020, Callaway has updated both its Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X balls in the never-ending quest to squeeze out more yards while retaining control and consistency.
The newest iteration of each of these balls better serves the purpose of each: the Chrome Soft is for the player looking for distance throughout the bag, while the Chrome Soft X is for the player who wants maximum distance off the tee but maximum consistency through the green.
The Chrome Soft is a four-piece ball with a dual core and urethane cover. The newest edition features a larger core and a thinner (but more durable) outer core, designed to increase spin on shorter shots. The cover is thinner with a new hexagonal pattern, and is designed to reduce spin and maximize speed on longer shots.
The new Chrome Soft will be available in white, yellow, Truvis (white/red, yellow/black) and Triple Track white.
The Chrome Soft X is a four-piece ball with one large inner core, which is a change from the last model which featured a double core. The rubber that comprises the core is more resilient than before, which is all about maximizing speed.
Surrounding the single core is a dual-layer mantle which is the key to increasing speed on the woods while increasing spin with the wedges. The inner mantle layer is soft, while the outer layer is firmer.
The higher-flying Chrome Soft X ball will be available in white, Truvis (yellow/black), and Triple Track white.
Both the Callaway Chrome Soft and Chrome Soft X golf balls will retail for $47.99 per dozen and will be available March 12.
