When Callaway introduced the original Chrome Soft about a year ago, the lower compression golf ball that combined modern distance with old-school balata feel became a hit with both amateur and professional golfers alike. The new and improved Chrome Soft will feature a 4- piece construction that provides even more control from tee to green for the company’s flagship product.

The new Chrome Soft is designed with Callaway’s proprietary Dual SoftFast Core which benefits golfers by lowering spin on shots hit with a driver, wood or long iron. While the original Chrome Soft did a solid job with optimizing launch conditions off the tee, the new ball does it in a more efficient way, combining an extremely soft inner core with a firmer outer layer that allows the ball to be more easily compressed with less torque.

“It’s a little counterintuitive but the softer core actually helps to reduce the amount of spin and it’s able to do that because the ball is able to be compressed more fully on full swings,” said Dave Bartels, Sr. Director of Golf Ball R&D at Callaway. “With this new construction what we essentially are doing is putting our best core technology into our leading product.”

Comparing the spin profile of the new Chrome Soft to its predecessor, golfers can expect very similar launch conditions with their longer clubs. The separation really begins to show as you progress to the scoring clubs. Players will gain additional distance control and slightly more spin on full shots; partial shots around the green will generate substantially more spin than what was offered in last year’s model.

The additional spin comes from the new construction matched with the same soft urethane cover used in last year’s model. However, unlike the original Chrome Soft, the new ball benefits from an improved coating system to minimize scuffs and stains from repeated play.

Features at a glance:

  • New Dual SoftFast Core optimizes launch conditions off the tee by reducing spin while maintaining fast ball speeds.
  • New 4-piece construction, mantle layer and urethane cover combine to deliver more predictable distance control in the scoring zone and even more spin for your short game.
  • Low compression with incredibly soft feel lets you play more aggressive shots around the greens without sacrificing the distance you’ve come to expect from a Tour-level ball.

The new Chrome Soft, which is now manufactured in the United States, is priced at $39.99 per dozen and will be available at retail on February 5th.
