Boston Course Review: Robert T. Lynch Municipal

By Craig Schroeder, AmateurGolf.com Player Staff Program I recently played Robert T. Lynch Municipal —often referred to as Putterham —on a weekday morning. It cost $30 to walk 18 holes, and had a surprising number of golfers on it for the middle of the week. The interesting thing about Putterham is its location. It borders the famous Country Club in Brookline, Mass. and while it might not share the same conditions, the terrain is similar. Considering the price, Robert T. Lynch Muni is a bargain. There is nothing that really stands out about it, but I’ve played courses in worse shape that cost a lot more. The tee boxes were decently mowed, the fairways were in respectable shape, and there was a nice difference in length for the rough. A few of the greens, however, were in rough shape with a few that were either burnt out or still recovering from aeration. The layout is very flat and a little repetitive. As I mentioned, there is nothing remarkable about this course, so you probably aren’t going to finish your round and be talking about any particular hole. There are a handful of sharp doglegs—both off the tee and on second shots—but minimal places where you can get in trouble. A couple of creeks run across the back nine and can easily ruin a perfect drive down the middle. I usually hit my driver around 275 yards, and I was pleased with the number of times I could hit it on this course. While there are a couple of short par-4s, or holes with tricky doglegs where I had to take an iron off the tee, for the most part I was able to hit driver. That did result in a lot of wedge approach shots though as the course isn’t overly long. All things considered, if you’re looking for an affordable place to play in Boston, or are a fan of munis, Putterham is a pretty good option.
