Callaway Player Review: Big Bertha Alpha

By Zach Carter, AmateurGolf.com Player Staff I'm happy to say that I'm currently playing the newest addition to Callaway's driver collection, the Big Bertha Alpha. Before I get into the specifications of the club, I would like to first note that within the past year, I have spent a lot of time and effort looking for a driver that would help neutralize my tendency to over draw the ball to more of a straighter ball flight. I was also looking for a driver that would lower my ball flight as well. With the Big Bertha Alpha, I was able to find a deadly combination with the right shaft and correct settings. In the past year, I've struggled to find my fit with the following drivers: Taylormade RBZ, the Taylormade R1 430 cc tour head as well as the stock 460cc head, the Taylormade SLDR tour head as well as the stock SLDR head. After reading some of the reviews for the Big Bertha Alpha, I decided to jump off the Taylormade Train and join Team Callaway. Within the first week of hitting the market, I got my hands on the Alpha and put in an upgraded Fujikura Motore 661 X-stiff speeder shaft. It took me awhile to find out which setting I preferred because there are many different ways you can make this "your" driver. It took me about 30 minutes to figure out what I needed. and at the end of my practice session, I concluded that the best setting for me was +1 degree with a neutral lie, a three-gram weight in the toe and five-gram weight in the heel. I also adjusted the gravity core which is their new technology to ensure my driver maintains a low center of gravity. The feel of this driver is amazing -- not only can I adjust the lie and loft, but I can also adjust the center of gravity. The midnight blue paint job with the classic shape of the head gives me a ton of confidence over every tee shot. I have noticed that even my misses still travel a pretty good distance, which is something most drivers can't offer. The face of the club produces a slightly dull sound but there is nothing dull about the amount of distance I've gained. I would be hard pressed to find another driver that performs as well as the Big Bertha Alpha.
