We take a look at Nike's latest combination set, the VR Forged Pro Combo Irons, featuring True Temper's DG Pro Shaft
The idea of a combination irons has long been one that Nike Golf embraces. Its latest iron combination, however, is anything but dated.
The Nike VR Forged Pro Combo irons, released earlier this fall, are a new take on an old style Nike employed when it first began releasing clubs more than 10 years ago but have updated technologies and a more progressive design than its predecessors.
In the long irons of the Forged Pro Combo set for 2014, Nike added a pocket cavity -- which can also be seen in the manufacturer's woods -- to lower the center of gravity and make it easier for golfers of varying skill levels to hit the ball high and with proper spin. In the short irons, there is a more traditional cavity-back design aiding in consistent shots and feel on approach shots.
Nike extended the 'split' in the combo set, stretching the dual pocket-cavity clubs to the 6-iron (in last year's set, it went only to the 5-iron). The 7-iron through pitching wedge feature the perimeter-weighted cavity back design.
The key to the updated design that will help Nike grow its following among avid players and low handicappers is the addition of a polymer coating that enhances the feel, sound and feedback from all of the irons in the set.
Nike's X3X grooves, formerly only found on Tiger Woods' irons and the 2013 VR Forged Wedges, complete the set.
With True Temper's Dynamic Gold Pro shafts as standard option, Nike's VR Forged Pro Combo Irons are available in stores and retail at $999.
