All in the name: Tom Watson leads Watson Challenge
Parkville, MO (June 7, 2013) -- On a beautiful summer day at the National Golf Club forty eight players arrived to the tee this morning in hopes of raising the trophy on Sunday as the 2013 Watson Challenge Champion. The most anticipated round of the day came from the one and only Tom Watson. Watson showed up playing solid golf to shoot three under par to finish with the best score of the day. Finding himself in a familiar place on top of the leaderboard, Watson would putt in for par on the 18th to finish with a 69 and take first place in round one.
“The rough was really nasty out there,” said Watson. “But I hit it great off the tee today and only missed one fairway.”
Watson managed to shoot five birdies in his round and would record a bogey on only two holes throughout the day.
Amateur Ryan Zech of Carney, MO finished just one stroke behind Watson, shooting two under par 70. The Mizzou Tiger would birdie on the third and fifth holes and continued to shoot par through the remainder of his round.
Clay Ederer from Olathe,KS and Bryan Norton from Mission Hills, KS would tie for third both shooting one under par 71. Sean Dougherty of Overland Park, KS and Amateur Curtis Yonke, former Kansas State Wildcat, tied for fifth today both shooting par 72.
