MAMARONECK, NY (June 6, 2013) -- The
amateur slate's most prestigious four-ball
event teed off Thursday at historic Winged
Foot and two teams sit atop the stroke-player
leaderboard after the first of two 18-hole
qualifying rounds ahead of the match play
portion of the event.
The teams of Trevor Randolph and Paul
Derosa and Eoghan O'Connell and Dan
O'Callaghan both opened play with 4-under
66s and sit atop the leaderboard.
Randolph and Derosa play out of
Congressional while O'Connell and O'Callaghan
are representing The Fox Club.
Robert Funk and David Bartman lead a group
of four teams sitting one shot back in a tie for
third place. Winged Foot members Hans
Albertsson and Brian Williams used their local
knowledge to shoot 67.
Max Buckley, a recent winner at the New York
City Amateur Championship and teammate
Max Christina are two back in a tie for
seventh after a first-round 68.
Two-time defending champions Parker Smith
and Dan Crockett shot a 70 and sit in a tie for
15th. Smith, of course, won it with a different
partner in 2010, meaning he's going for his
fourth straight title.
In the Senior Division, Bart Goodwin and Mike
Peck of Old American Golf Club lead a group
of three teams atop the leaderboard. Goodwin
and Peck, Winged Foot members Tim Hultquist
and Chris Mara and the team of Thomas
Bartolacci and Joseph Viechnicki are all in a
first-place tie with opening-round 68s.
Defending champions Jim Holtgrieve (of
Walker Cup and USGA fame) and Tom Case of
Pine Valley are tied for 12th place after
shooting 73.
The second qualifying round is tomorrow
before brackets of 16 teams are created and
match play begins.
