San Antonio Match Play Champion
SAN ANTONIO (April 9, 2006)--John Elizondo completed his run through the field
with a convincing victory over Philip Hui to win the Greater San Antonio Match
Play Championship at Mission del Lago Golf Club.
Elizondo's 5&4 win in the
championship match capped off a dominating performance throughout the
tournament. After claiming medalist honors with a 66 in stroke play qualifying,
Elizondo won five of his six matches by at least three holes, with only
the 2004 champion John Pierce taking him to the 18th hole in round three. The win was
Elizondo's first San Antonio championship.
In the morning semifinals, Elizondo held off the 2003 champion Tom Immenschuh
3&2, while Hui defeated Kyle Collins, the 2005 runner-up, in 20 holes. On his
way to the final, the 10th seeded Hui beat the 2nd, 3rd, and 7th seeds.
In the final match of the consolation bracket, Nicolas Olivarri defeated Al Pineault 1 up.
The Match Play was the first San Antonio championship of the 2006 season. Next
up on the schedule is the Greater San Antonio Senior Amateur, to be played May
5-7 at Woodlake Country Club.
