NCAA Div. III: Methodist leads early
DESTIN, Fla. – Methodist shot an opening-round 290 and currently resides in first place after day one of the Division III national championships at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort.

The Monarchs are the top team in relation to par (+2) as half the field played the par-71 Raven Course, and the other half, including second-place Methodist (288), played the par-72 Links course. The teams will switch courses for day two before playing rounds three and four at the Raven.

In terms of total strokes, St. John’s (Minn.) (292) sits in third, UT-Tyler (293) is fourth and Illinois Wesleyan is fifth (294) in the 41-team field.

The Monarchs were led by Jeff Wells, who opened with a three-under par round of 69 and is currently the event leader. Mike Wesko fired a one-under round of 71 and is tied for third place.

Ben Boyle and Dakun Chang each carded rounds of 75 to tie for 27th and Andrew Bateman rounded out the Methodist competitors with a +6 round of 78 to reside in a tie for 72nd.

Methodist will kick off round two at on Wednesday on the Raven.
