Alexandria, LA (April 28, 2013) -- Squirrel Run Golf Club of New Iberia had a two shot lead over Hebert Municipal Golf Club from Lafayette at the start of the final round of the 2013 Louisiana Golf Association Club Team Championship. However, it was the host club, OakWing Golf Club of Alexandria, that would rally from behind and claim the victory. Sunday’s play consisted of individual stroke play with a team’s score being determined by the best four of six individual scores. This format means that no lead is insurmountable and makes for an exciting finish. OakWing, Champions in 2009, flipped their five shot deficit to start the final round into a five shot win.

OakWing accounted for four of the twelve scores that were posted under par today. The veteran team showed grit and determination to grind out the victory. Their knowledge of their home course helped too. Their team total of 17-under par 415 bested second place Hebert Municipal Golf Club of Lafayette (12-under, 240) by five shots and third place Squirrel Run Golf Club of New Iberia (7-under, 425) by ten shots.

The Champion team from OakWing was led by 2011 LGA Senior Amateur Champion, Rod Baronet, who fired a final round 69. Baronet started his round with a bogey on the par 4 1st hole, but quickly rebounded with a birdie on the par 5 2nd. Two consecutive pars at the 3rd and 4th were followed by a birdie at the par 4 5th. Baronet finished his front nine with three more pars and a bogey on the par 5 9th, making the turn at even par, 36. The back 9 was where Baronet got it going. He started with a birdie at the par 3 10th, followed by five consecutive pars. Baronet birdied two of the last three holes (16 and 18) to cap off his round of three under par 69.

Frank Brame (70), Keith Breazeale (70), and Doyle Eznack (71) also turned in scores under par for OakWing. The head golf professional at OakWing, Craig Campo, who was paired with Baronet yesterday and today shot an even par 72.

The runner-up squad from Hebert Municipal was led by a pair of 70s from Ted and Thad Weber. Paul Hamilton and David Duhon shot 74, while James Hamilton shot a 78. The low round of the day belongs to Brody Leblanc of Squirrel Run who fired a blistering four-under par 68. He carded birdies on holes 6, 8, 12, 13, 14, and 16.

Under par scores recorded on Sunday were: Squirrel Run’s Leblanc (68), OakWing’s Baronet (69), OakWing #2’s Ben Hargis (69), OakWing’s Breazeale (70) and Brame (70), LA South Amateur Golf Tour’s Matt Berard (70), Golf Club at Timber Trails’ Chuck Dechert (70), Hebert Municipal’s Thad Weber (70) and Ted Weber (70), OakWing’s Eznack (71), OakWing #2’s Corky Yates, who shot better than his age by two strokes (71), and LA South Amateur Golf Tour’s David Griffin (71).

Course conditions today were soft, with clouds covering the sky most of the day, but the rain held off, and the competitors enjoyed comfortable weather. The Championship drew 15 teams from across the state. Clubs participating in the event are represented by six-man teams. As previously mentioned, Saturday’s play consisted of four-ball stroke play with each team counting the two best of their three four-ball scores. Sunday’s play consisted of individual stroke play with a team’s score being determined by the best four of six individual scores.
