Alpharetta, Ga. (April 5, 2013) -- British Amateur champion Alan Dunbar made a 12-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole Thursday to close out U.S. Amateur champion Steven Fox and win the 16th Annual Georgia Cup, 1 up, at The Golf Club of Georgia.

With the victory, it allowed the British Amateur Champions to even the all-time series of The Georgia Cup at 8-8.

Fox, a senior at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga, took the match to the 18th hole for the first time in the event’s existence by sinking a 30-foot birdie putt at the par-3 17th hole of the Lakeside Course, cutting Dunbar’s lead to 1-up going to 18.

At the par-5 18th, Dunbar hit his second shot into a greenside bunker, but got up and down for birdie, making an uphill 12-footer, to end the match.

Of the cold, rainy conditions that were very unseasonable for Georgia, but typical of his homeland, Dunbar said, “I thought it was a great day.”

Both players will play next week in the Masters. Dunbar plans to turn pro immediately following the Masters, but Fox will remain an amateur until later this summer.

Hall of Famer Billy Casper, the former Masters and two-time U.S. Open Champion, served as Honorary Captain for The Georgia Cup. The event benefits the Folds of Honor Foundation and the Georgia State Golf Association Foundation.
