Texas (TGA) State Club Team: Hollytree CC Repeats

Defending Champion Hollytree Country Club overcame a five shot deficit to successfully defend its title and win the 2006 TGA State Club Team Championship. Darin Newhouse (70) and Reggie Howell (74) combined for an even par 144 that allowed the team from Tyler to edge past Cimarron Hills of Georgetown by one stroke.

The championship at Pine Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Frankston came down to the very end. Hollytree had already posted a 292 total and was anxiously waiting as the final groups completed play. Wayne Smith of Cimarron Hills found the water on #18 which led to a double-bogey and a final round 76. His teammate, Grady Bruce, had posted a 71, which gave Cimarron Hills a second day score of 147, leaving them one shot short. Bruce posted the lowest individual total with a one under par 143.

Brook Hollow Country Club of Dallas made a charge with a one over par final round of 145 (Artie Starrs 72, Billy McBee 73) for a third place finish, two shots back. First round leader Dallas Country Club struggled to a final round 156 to fall well back into the field.

The TGA State Club Team is a 36 hole tournament played under the USGA State Team format, with the low two scores of the three player team accounting for the team total each day. It is a format that has brought Texas success at the USGA State Team Championship, with two wins in the six playings of the event.

ABOUT THE Texas State Club Team

UPDATE: In 2005, after an 8-year hiatus, the Texas Golf Association brought back the State Club Team Championship as a way for member clubs to get together and enjoy the spirit of camaraderie and competition.

However, the championship failed to attract much interest among member clubs and players over the ensuing years, despite continued enhancements to the event.

The TGA has surveyed many players to get their opinion and assessment for the low participation rate and have found that there are multiple areas of concerns: number of players per team, championship format, date, and host site.

After an internal review, the TGA has elected to suspend the State Club Team Championship in 2013, allowing time to discuss possible solutions and recommendations for its future.
