LAKE WORTH, Fla. – Steve Anderson of Hobe Sound and John Powers of Delray Beach won the opening tournament Saturday for the 38th season of the Palm Beach County Golf Association.

Anderson and Powers shot their second straight of eight under par 63 for 126 on the North course at Fountains Country Club to top the open division of the third annual Spring Four-Ball by two strokes. In the senior division for players 50 years and older, the winners were Pete Williams of Juno Beach and Jimmy Key of Palm Beach Gardens with63-59—122.

Mark Sasser of Jupiter and David Alexander of Palm Beach Gardens scored 62-59—121 to capture the open net flight.

Of the six winners Saturday, Alexander was the only one who had never won a PBCGA event. Anderson now has 11 County Association titles, Williams nine, Key six, Powers four and Sasser two. It was the third team title for Williams and Key, while Anderson and Williams twice won the Junior-Senior, in 2010-11.

“We were never in any trouble,” in danger of making bogey, Powers noted, “and Steve played really solid both days. The longest birdie putt we made was a 25 footer I had at the second hole Friday. In two days, we missed three putts inside six feet.”

Williams holed a 60-foot chip shot for an eagle at the par-5 third hole Saturday and totaled 13 birdies. Key made 11 birdies. “We were never close to bogey in two days,” said Key, a former major league pitcher.

Next on the PBCGA tournament schedule: April 6-7, The International, Ironhorse CC, West Palm Beach, and April 12, Pricey Par 3 Shootout, Jupiter Dunes GC, hosted by Nick Price. For membership information and tournament entry, go to www.pbcga.org.
