Tarheel Cup: Amateurs take early lead

PINEHURST, N.C. (March 11, 2013) -- Behind strong play in Day 1 four-ball action, the Carolina Golf Association amateurs take a 3-1 lead over the professionals on Day 1 of the 2013 Tarheel Cup Matches at Country Club of North Carolina.

Rick Lewallen and Chris Haarlow were able to defeat amateurs Matt Crenshaw and Blair Bowland but the amateur teams won the three other matches on Day 1.

Paul Tucker and David Gies II were 3-and-2 winners over Paul Dickens and Mike Townsend. Scott Harvey and Brian Westveer defeated Billy Anderson and John Faidley, 2-up and Paul Simson and Chase Wilson knocked off Cory Schneider and Todd Camplin 1-up.

Day 2 singles matches begin at 8 a.m. Tuesday.

ABOUT THE Tar Heel Cup

Eight North Carolina professionals representing the Carolinas PGA (CPGA) compete against North Carolina amateurs representing the Carolinas Golf Association (CGA) in Four-Ball and Singles Match Play. Tar Heel Cup consists of two days of competition. Day 1 format is Four-Ball Match Play. Day 2 format is Singles Match Play. Each match is worth 1 point each. A halved match earns each side ½ point.
