VIERA, Fla. (March 5, 2013) -- Bruce Pape prevailed in a playoff to earn first place honors at the Winter Series event conducted at Viera East Golf Club in Viera, on March 4-5. Pape was joined in the winner’s circle by Lee Hebbard and Ray Darmstadt, who won the Senior and Super Senior divisions respectively.
Bruce Pape, of Lakeland, captured the 40-54 division in an exciting two hole playoff. After rounds of 73-77, Pape found himself tied with Stevenson Clarke, of West Palm Beach, and Jim Hammons, of Port Orange. The three players would head for a sudden death playoff on hole number 18. After Hammonds was eliminated on the first hole Pape would go on to make birdie on the second playoff hole to capture the title. Jerry Rose, of Sarasota, finished in fourth place with a tournament total of 151.
Lee Hebbard, of Mount Dora, erased a three shot deficit to win his first event of the season. Hebbard carded a two-over par 74 in the first round to trail Howard Logan, of Naples, heading into the final round. Hebbard fired the low round of the event on Tuesday, posting a three-under par 69 to win by three strokes. Howard Logan, and Kary Kaltenbacher, of Englewood, finished tied for second place with a tournament total of two-over par 146.
Ray Darmstadt, of Cocoa Beach, posted a tournament total of 152 to win the Super Senior division by two strokes. After posting 78 in round one, Darmstadt followed up with a solid round of two-over par 74 to win the title. Darmstadt who turns 79 later this summer, accomplished the rare feat of shooting under his age once again in Winter Series competition. Tom Austin, of Lake Wales, took home second place honors after rounds of 74-80. Mack Wilcox, of Venice, earned third place honors with a tournament total of 155.
The Winter Series events include seven competitions, six individual events and one four-ball event. There are three age divisions, Mid-Senior (40-54), Senior (55-64) and Super Senior (65 & over). The Winter Series is a great opportunity for golfers to compete in competitive events that normally may not because they do not live in Florida year round.
