Early Wins Senior Division
By Lila Hillard

SAN FRANCISCO, CA –March 5, 2006

Jeff Early of Pleasanton won the 2006 San Francisco City Golf Champion for the Senior Division at Harding Park on the 18th hole, 1 up against his opponent, Dave Carroll from Silverado.

The match was close throughout the day with both playing excellent golf. In spite of the inclement weather, Early shot 1 under and Carroll shot even par through 17 holes.

On the 16th, Carroll was 2 down but came back strong by making a birdie after trying to drive the green while Early two putted to bring the match to 1 up. They halved the 17th and then approached the crucial 18th hole. Carroll pulled his tee shot into the bushes above Lake Merced, forcing him to reload back at the tee box. This second time around produced a perfectly placed tee shot in the center of the fairway. A nice approach shot put him in the middle of the green in 4. Meanwhile, Early’s tee shot was on the right side in the short rough. Early’s second shot came up short in front of the bunker. Early made it up and down for the par, the match, and the entire championship.

“We both played well but he deserved to win,” observed the gracious Carroll. Early joked that he had a bit of good fortune on the 10th hole today, when he hooked a ball into the woods and was having trouble finding it. His opponent from yesterday’s match, Ronnie Wiley, was following the group and happened to locate it. “When Wiley found my ball, I was able to halve the hole and stay 1 up. I never lost that lead.”
