UCLA wins playoff at Amer Ari Invitational in Hawaii

WAIKOLOA, Hawaii (Feb. 8, 2013) -- UCLA caught second-round leader Washington on Friday in the final round of the Amer Ari Invitational, and eventually beat the Huskies in a sudden-death playoff.

The Bruins held a share of the first-round lead at Waikoloa (Hawaii) Beach Golf Resort’s Kings’ Course, and trailed Washington by two shots entering the final round. By the end of the final 18 holes, Washington, No. 6 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, was tied with UCLA, No. 7, at 22-under 842.

Players from both teams returned to the course at the end of the day for a sudden-death playoff. UCLA counted five pars at the par-4 17th while Washington counted three pars and two bogeys.

The victory is UCLA’s second this season. TCU finished at 15-under 849, seven shots out of the playoff. Georgia Tech, USC and Texas were tied for fourth another shot behind that.

Auburn’s Dominic Bozzelli won the individual title by two shots over Oregon State’s David Fink and Washington’s Trevor Simsby. Bozzelli shot rounds of 70-68-67 to finish at 11-under 205. Fink and Simsby finished at 9-under 207.

Second co-leaders Pontus Widegren of UCLA and Cody Gribble of Texas dropped to T-4 with final rounds of 71.

The Amer Ari Intercollegiate -- hosted by the University of Hawaii-Hilo -- has brought some of the best golfers in the nation to the west side of the Big Island annually since its inception in 1992. From Tiger Woods to Jordan Spieth to Matt Kuchar, the Amer Ari Intercollegiate has hosted a myriad of players through the years who have gone on to professional stardom.

The event was originally played at Hapuna Golf Course at Mauna Kea Resort before moving to the Waikoloa Beach Resort. The Amer Ari returned to Hapuna during the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2024, the event was moved to Mauna Lani. The Amer Ari is a 54-hole collegiate men's event with individual and team competitions.
