Essay leads S. Carolina Tournament of Champions

PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. (Jan. 26, 2013) -- The 17th Annual Tournament of Champions is underway at The Tradition Club in Pawleys Island and 96 Champions from 2012 were greeted with cold temperatures in the morning and abundant sunshine for the afternoon.

After the completion of round one the leader in Men’s Club Division is Chris Eassy of Greer with a day two under score of 70. In the Senior Club Division, Bill Hall of Rock Hill shot nines of 36-34 for a two under score of 70 to hold a four shot lead over two others. Casey Smith of Abbeville is leading the One Day Gross Division with a low score for the day of 69. Columbia’s Bernie Shealy has a four shot lead in the One Day Senior Division with a score of 71. Natalie Huff from Elgin leads the ladies with a score of 73 to take the top position in the Women’s Division. In the One Day Net Division Mike Robinson used his nine handicap and a score of 78 to take a five shot lead over his nearest competitor.

The final round will begin with a 9:30 a.m. shotgun start on Sunday, January 27th.

The 17th Annual Tournament of Champions is being played over the Tradition Golf Club layout in Pawleys Island, S.C. The field consists 96 men & women Club and One Day tournament Champions throughout South Carolina. The Tournament of Champions is one of 19 Major Championships that the South Carolina Golf Association conducts through the year.

ABOUT THE South Carolina Tournament of Champions

With the first event held in January of 1997, The Tournament of Champions was created to honor the Champions of the SCGA Member Club events and the SCGA One Day Tournaments throughout the year prior.

Participants compete against one another in flights based on how they qualified. Flights are broken up as Men's Club Champions, Men's Senior Club Champions, SCGA One Day Gross winners, SCGA One Day Net winner, SCGA One Day Senior winners and a Women's Division that includes both Women's Club Champions and WSCGA One Day winners. Each flight plays from a predetermined set of tees and competes only against other players in their respective flight.

From the first event of 42 players, the Tournament of Champions now reaches capacity and has become of one of the highlights for many players throughout the year.
