SCGA Super Senior: Vanyo takes lead
OJAI, Calif. (Nov. 27, 2012) -- The first round of the 13th SCGA Super Senior Championship is in the books after a great round of play at Soule Park GC in Ojai Monday. In the Gross Division, the first round leader is Ray Vanyo from Banning, who shot a 1-under par 71, representing the 511th time in his life he has shot his age. Close behind are Marty Temple from Anaheim and Michael Mahoney from La Jolla, who both carded an even par 72.
In the Net Division the first round leader is Bob Tyler from Silverlinks GC, who finished round one with a 7-under par 65. Within striking distance heading into the tournament's final round Tuesday are Charles South from the Golf Coast Seniors GC and Joseph Ortega from Santa Barbara Men’s Club, both at 67.
The Super Senior Championship is conducted for SCGA members 65 years and older. Soule Park’s William Bell-designed golf course was rated No. 41 on Golf Week’s top municipal courses. The Kikuyu fairways and bent grass greens play wonderfully amongst the backdrop of the rolling hills of the Ojai Valley. This tranquil spot is a coveted qualifying position, and the surrounding town of Ojai offers a great get away in a wonderfully relaxed environment for everyone as well.
