Norcal H.S. girls - Foothill H.S., Xu take titles
STOCKTON – Just as its male counterparts had done six months ago, the Foothill High School girls team added an NCGA/CIF High School Championship title to its name, winning Monday’s championship by seven strokes over St. Francis High School.
Foothill was led by twin sisters Katie and Alex Sborov, who fired rounds of 71 and 73, respectively, to help the team shoot 35-over 395. The other three scores to count toward Foothill’s total were Winky Wong (82), Lulu Huang (84) and Ashna Jasuja (85), while the one score thrown out was that of Annie Hsu (87). For the Sborov sisters, seniors at the Pleasanton-based high school, the victory could be considered a belated birthday gift, as the two celebrated their 18th birthday on Sunday.
St. Francis, which has won eight titles since the championship’s inception 13 years ago, finished second with a team total of 402. The Sacramento-based school was led by Emily Laskin and Tarah Kubes, who both fired in the 70s, with rounds of 76 and 79 respectively. Others to contribute to that total were Carina Carter (81), Victoria Vardanega (82) and Ileana McDonald (84), while Cheyenne Theis (94) had the non-counted score.
Mission San Jose High School, the defending champions of the NCGA/CIF Girls Championship, will be the third team to join Foothill and St. Francis at next week’s state finals. Mission San Jose finished at 404 — tied for third with Justin Siena High School, but because the score of the sixth member of itsteam was better than Justin Siena’s, Mission San Jose won the tiebreaker to advance.
For the individual title, Kathleen Scavo and Nancy Xu had to battle it out in a sudden death playoff after both players finished 18 holes with stellar rounds of five-under par 67. On the first playoff hole Xu made birdie to win medalist honors. Xu, a 16-year-old junior at St. Francis in Mountain View, had an impeccable scorecard, making five birdies and no bogeys in regulation, including birdies on her final two holes. Scavo, a 15-year-old sophomore at Justin Siena, made six birdies in her round, with her lone bogey coming on the 15th hole, which played as the fifth toughest hole for the day.
Others to join Xu and Scavo as individuals at the state finals include Kimberley Liu, Paige Lee, Aman Sangha, Sara Scarlett, Anna Zhou, Isabella Bosetti and Grace Park. All individuals shot scores of even-par 72 or better to qualify, with Bosetti and Park needing to beat out Kelsey Ulep in a sudden-death playoff for the final spot.
The CIF state finals will take place next week on Tuesday November 13 at Red Hill CC in Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.
