Texas Shootout: South rolls on strength of seniors
TRINITY, Texas (Oct. 29, 2012) -- The second day of the 2012 Texas Shootout provided more entertainment and great golf as the top 24 Texas amateurs were able to display the skills that earned them an invitation to the year’s final championship. Whispering Pines Golf Club, in Trinity, was the perfect backdrop for the Ryder Cup style matches between mid-amateurs and seniors from north and south Texas. It was the stellar play over the past two days from the South Seniors that helped guide the South team to its third consecutive Shootout title.

Utilizing the Nassau Scoring System (1 point for the front nine, 1 point for the back nine and 1 point for the overall), the Singles matches provided 36 points between the 12 matches. With the South leading 20.5-15.5 as the morning began, and needing 36.5 total points to claim the title, the matches saw the South flex their muscles on the front side, collecting 8.5 of the 12 possible points.

It was the strong play of the South Seniors, who all made the turn leading their four matches, that carried the momentum to the back nine. Mike Booker recorded three birdies en route to a 3-0 win against Jerry Hudgins. Mike Rice and Bob Kearney each blanketed their North Senior opponents with 3-0 wins as well. Gary Durbin was able to win the front side and the overall 18, while halving the back nine against Chuck Palmer for a 2.5-0.5 margin. The four South Seniors won 11.5 of 12 points in the Singles matches and 22 of 24 total Senior points over the past two days.

The South Team was able to hoist the Texas Shootout trophy once again with their commanding 44-28 victory over the North Team. With guidance from their Captain, dedicated South volunteer Woody Fail, now take a 6-4 lead in the Shootout record books. The three formats, Foursome, Four Ball and Singles matches, gave each team the chance to bond together and represent for their respective side.

The Texas Golf Association would like to thank the staff and membership at Whispering Pines Golf Club for their tremendous hospitality during the 2012 Texas Shootout
