NCGA/NCPGA Cup Matches: Pros jump to lead
PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. (Oct. 22, 2012) -- The NCPGA got off to a quick lead in the morning four-ball matches of both the Hanna-Wehrman and Staedler-Jetter Cups. In the Hanna-Wehrman Cup the NCPGA grabbed a 3-2 lead in the morning session, winning three of the five matches, while in the Staedler-Jetter Cup, the seniors from the NCPGA out did the NCGA seniors, winning four of seven matches to take a 4-3 lead.

The winners for the NCGA on the Hanna-Wehrman Cup side of things were the teams of Russell Humphrey and Jeff Hoffman, and Ricky Stockton and Josh Stone. Humphrey and Hoffman, fresh off their Master-Division Four-Ball Championship together, went out in the first match defeating the team of Dave Carr and Hae Lee 1 up. Stockton and Stone, however, were the first to finish as they annihilated the NCPGA team of Mitch Lowe and Rick Leibovich 6 & 5.

The NCGA teams which lost their morning four-ball matches included Andrew Biggadike and Matt Cohn, Danny Paniccia and Andrej Bevins and Nick Moore and Robby Salomon. Mid-amateurs, Biggadike and Cohn, in the second match of the day fell 2 & 1 to Steve Watanabe and Jefferey Anderson. Thirty-five-year-old, Paniccia, and 17-year-old, Bevins, lost to Shawn McEntee and Joe Dolby 3 & 2 in the third match of the day. Monterey county residents Nick Moore and Robby Salomon, playing in the final morning match, also lost 3 & 2 to Stuart Smith and Ray Otis.

In the morning Staedler-Jetter Cup matches, the NCGA lost the first two matches as Peter Moren and Herb Jensen, and Michael Brannan and Gary Vanier both lost by a margin of 2 & 1. Moren and Jensen fell to the NCPGA team of Chris Bitticks and Michael Cook, while Brannan and Vanier lost to Dave DeLong and Terry Myers. The NCGA also lost the fourth match featuring NCGA Senior Four-Ball Champions Casey Boyns and Mark Miller, and the seventh match with the team of Ron Johnson and Bob Rowland. Boyns and Miller fell to Tom Ringer and Michael Paul 2 and 1, while Johnson and Rowland lost on the 18th hole to Joe Vavra and Larry Babica 2 up.

The teams who the NCGA proved to be successful with were Scott Anderson and Terry Foreman, Jeff Burda and Jim Knoll and Bob Olds and Rob Thompson. Anderson and Foreman dominated in their match winning on the 13th hole, 6 & 5 over Mitch Thomas and John Snopkowski. Burda and Knoll, and Olds and Thompson both won on the 18th hole 2 up, with Knoll and Burda beating Shawn Kelly and Charlie Gibson, while Olds and Thompson beat Gerry Greenfield and Eddie Duino.

ABOUT THE Hanna-Wehrman Cup Matches

The Hanna-Wehrman Cup features 10 amateur players representing the NCGA (top players from the previous season’s points list) taking on 10 professional players representing the Northern California PGA in a Ryder Cup-like format.

The first day of play consists of two rounds—one round of four-ball match play (better ball) and one round of foursome match play (alternate shot). The second day of play’s final rounds consist of singles match play.
