Mid-Atlantic Amateur: Rice knocks off McCarthy
BALTIMORE, Mary. (Oct. 8, 2012) -- After deadlocking at one-under par 279 over 72 holes with Ryan McCarthy of Rockville, MD, Andrew Rice of Baltimore finally knocked out McCarthy on the second play-off hole for a dramatic victory in the 106th Middle Atlantic Amateur championship at the famed East Course of the Baltimore Country Club.
Rice had to birdie the 72nd hole to force McCarthy into the play-off while Rice's fellow BCC clubmate Brett Williams birdied the 72nd only to fall one stroke short of the play-off. Williams had come tantalizingly close to another birdie on the 17th hole of the round while McCarthy had holed a tough sidehill 20-footer to move one ahead of Rice and two ahead of Williams.
Williams (70-69-68-73--280), one of the premier ball-strikers in the area and the 2011 Maryland Amateur runner-up, had another frustrating day on the treacherous East Course greens that he knows so well.
