amateurgolf.com Silicon Valley Am - Final Results

SAN JOSE, CA (January 22, 2006) -- Brett Lunde of Willits shot a remarkable 6-under-par 66 at Coyote Creek's Valley Course on Saturday -- a score that left several players wondering if he played the same golf course -- then followed it up with a 75 on the Tournament Course on Sunday for a 5 stroke victory over Casey Boyns of Pacific Grove in the 2nd Annual amateurgolf.com Silicon Valley Amateur.

Teeing off on the back nine, Lunde started the day just how he left off on Saturday, with a birdie on his first hole, the par 4 10th. He got to 2-under on the day and appeared to put Boyns and the rest of the field in his rear view mirror before back to back double bogeys on his 7th and 8th holes (the challenging 16th and 17th holes on the Tournament Course) eroded a good part of his lead - but he still had three strokes to play with. At the players' 13th hole, the par-5 4th, Lunde's birdie against Boyns' bogey expanded the lead to a comfortable 5 strokes. The lead was up to 7 heading to the 18th tee, where both players found the fairway bunker with their tee shots.

Boyns, who holed an 9-iron second shot for an eagle in the first round, picked a four iron that landed pin-high on the top tier, and he drained the 8-foot birdie putt to post a 74 and 146 total. Lunde hit an excellent fairway bunker shot as well, and hit a reasonable approach putt from the bottom tier. His 4-foot par putt did a 360, perhaps a little message from the golf gods to remind him that breaking par when nobody else does isn't to be taken for granted.

In the Senior Division, Lou Alvarez won his second straight amateurgolf.com event with a solid 71 giving him a 144 total of even par. Alvarez played steady golf all around, especially on the par 5's.

"I was really sticking my wedges on my third shots, and several times today I had it inside of 6 feet for birdie," said Alvarez, who resides in Auburn.

Tom Lyons fired an even par 72 on Sunday to wind up 5 strokes back with a very respectable tournament total of 149.

Gary Koshaba won his first amateurgolf.com event in the Net Division with an even par total of 144. "The only other event I can remember winning was a turkey shoot," said Koshaba, who was one of the few players in the field to par the diabolically-pinned 2nd hole on Sunday. Jim Grensted was runner up in the Net Division.

TOURNAMENT NOTES:

- Lunde's 66 wasn't totally out of the blue - the 21-year-old fired a 64 in the first round of the 2004 Mendocino County Amateur, an event he would go on to win.

- Special thanks to the entire staff at Coyote Creek Golf Club for hosting us for the second straight year, and to sponsors UST Golf Shaft and Bridgestone Golf for providing great tee prizes and utility clubs for the winners.

- To all players, thanks for understanding that the pin placements on Sunday on hole Nos. 2 and 8 were unintentionally extreme. amateurgolf.com will work with Coyote Creek and our other host courses at future events to guard against this happening again.
